re: Business Insider: It's official, Paul Krugman is smarter than you

why does nobody want to answer my practical questions about krugman's philosophy and the article?

I would be satisfied if one of our many Krugman acolytes would point out the actual (assuming 90% is now discredited) tipping point.

not a fan of krugman's at all, but i'll say this: i don't know that there is a
"tipping point" as such. seems more intuitively likely to me that it'd be a larger hindrance to growth the larger it became. maybe not really a linear relation, but an increasing one.

Saying, after being caught with your coding pants around your ankles, that your original findings didn't support austerity at all is a little diengeious....

well data is data is data

if there was an error, and they fix it, and the data still reflects the point, i don't see how you can argue the results

Did you say something beyond putting words into Krugman's mouth?

there's only 2 ways: reinterpreting it with a demonstrably better methodology, or by misrepresenting it.

i asked WHEN will we see the slashing of the federal budget, and WHY haven't we seen this in the past 20 years?

But it doesn't. It's not possible to draw the same conclusion from a study that showed negative growth versus one that shows GDP growth that's almost as robust as when debt ratios are much lower.

The austerity movement is now a laughingstock, thanks to a student and simple math.

So when will all those tax increases be repealed?

"Printing money" was not what Krugman was ever calling for, which was more govt spending.

No he called for deficit spending.

The process is the gov sells bonds to raise money. But where does the money to buy the bonds come from?

ANS: The Fed prints it.

You usually at least know what you talking about when you post, but not this time.

i'm not arguing about the particular study. i'm just saying data is data is data

if there was an erorr and when fixed, the data supports a point, it doesn't matter when it was released

To be fair, the Fed only bought 75% of the 30y notes in Feb. Uncle Ben would never monetize debt.

your opinion of the difference is laughably wrong.

The problem is that they have bought into the producer/parasite argument and fancy themselves modern day John Galts. They sincerely believe that if they work hard enough and make perfect decisions every time opportunity presents itself that they will some day be on an equal footing with the Koch's of the world. It is truly astonishing to witness.....

What is astonishing is that it seems you have so little faith in yourself that you don't even want the opportunity to try to achieve such status. A very small fraction will even attempt to achieve that status, with an even smaller fraction actually succeeding. Why should they not be rewarded? The majority of people are content living at the status quo, but it seems you would rather EVERYONE be forced to live at the status quo. It is quite a narcissistic view.

I keep waiting for Krugman to be right about something.

One of these days surely he's got to get SOMETHING right even by accident.

again, when have we seen federal spending cuts in the past 20 years? it happened ONE year out of 20

Far more than that, if put it in proper context.

The above is total government spending which also has seen decline in relation to GDP for several consecutive years in a time of economic growth.

re: Business Insider: It's official, Paul Krugman is smarter than you
i'm speaking in terms of absolutes

having our private economy explode around government spending, and government spending not increasing at the same rate, is not relevant

97-2000 just shows me that the private economy got hot (we should have seen major slashes in actual federal spending in this area, but the numbers don't back it up)

the SCARY part is how our boom 2004-2008 could not out-pace government spending

So when GDP increases more rapidly, the rate of spending to GDP decreases? Remarkable.
