I'm guessing Rendezvous is just a tourist attraction?

Yep. Buy a bottle of sauce and use it at home. Eat somewhere else though.

Memphis BBQ Co. in Horn Lake? Probably end up going there for a quick bite.

if you're trying to stay in the southaven area and you want BBQ, you should hit up Tom's BBQ. It's close to southaven and is easy to get to (just on the other side of the stateline). Much, much better the MBBQ.

Everytime I go to Memphis, I make sure to go to All Star Wings. These are the best I have had. They don't separate the drum off, so 6 wings is like 12 here. Plus, they have some great flavors.

I second the Soul Burger at Ernestine and Hazel's. Don't waste your time at Huey's. Also, gus's is the best fried chicken I've ever had.

I miss Gus's. They've opened one on Mendenhall since I moved. That isn't even fair. I would still be torn between there and The Belmont if I was around Eastgate though.

You might be ready to try Cozy Corner for lunch then. Place looks sketchy as hell, neighborhood is sketchy as hell, but the smoked cornish game hens are amazing.

re: Places to eat in Memphis?

Lived here for about a year and a half, and my thoughts are:

1. Earnestine & Hazel's is a good burger, but probably better when drunk. I was actually disappointed because it was so hyped up I was expecting something as wonderful as Port of Call. Manage your expectations.

2. If you go to Central BBQ, do not skip out on the BBQ nachos. You can request them with their house-made potato chips instead of tortilla chips and you will not be disappointed. They have a location downtown now, so you don't have to drive to Midtown.

3. I personally don't like Rendezvous. I prefer the wet BBQ and theirs is dry. If you choose to venture here, know that they are closed on Sunday and Monday. If you go on one of these days and entrepreneurial homeless man will point you to Blues City Cafe and ask for a dollar for his advice.

4. Blues City is good, but if you can go on Sunday evening, do. I usually take tourists there to hear the guy who now owns Sun Records. He tells lots of Memphis music history stories and plays a bunch of Elvis/Johnny Cash/Jerry Lee Lewis and stuff in the bar.

5. Small plates seems to be a trend in Memphis lately...no one has told you to go to Alchemy, but don't. It's hyped up but I don't get it. I was hungry when I left even though fiance' and I got like five plates to share.

6. Hog & Hominy - good, but I don't personally love it as much as everyone else. The one thing I will go there for no matter what is the peanut butter pie. It's addicting and I love it.

that was a game changer - drive by it every day and it's only about 2 miles from my house.

Speaking of the Belmont - probably the best burger in town.

Red Robin = good burgers for a chain. Wish there was one in Meridian. Have no idea where closest one is.

Glad to help. Let me know how it goes. There will likely be a security guard with a shotgun in the parking lot. Don't let that throw you off.
