I think that it was Tweezy who brought it up in a CL thread, but they housed their players in a straight up hostel in Malaga.

That's kind of awesome, as anti-Hollywood FC as it gets.

I don't follow news about them so closely but it would seem that the owners seem resigned to running a very good club that makes a healthy profit after their recent financial problems.

Kind of like an Udinese but with actual fans and history.

Still, selling him to your biggest rival at the same time your getting all the CL money. . . a lot of fan bases would riot. . .

It is interesting beast. Though I think that reaction had more to do with LeBron individually than anything else.

When Lebron went to Miami is a good example. The basketball universe crucified him for selling out, wanting to win a championship the wrong way, leaving his hometown, etc.

That was a pretty unique situation.

Not many people to my knowledge were getting upset when the Celtics were put together in 2007ish. They left their previous teams from trades on pretty amicable terms, but it was pretty obvious that Garnett and Allen were leaving to chase a title. frick, I cannot believe it has already been 5/6 years since that happened.

I am sad about Gotze leaving. Bayern will be too fricking good to let anyone else even compete for a league title. They are up 20 this year. They pecker slap teams 6-1 on the reg. They are awesome for European competition, but it makes the Bundesliga a little less exciting for the casual fan. On the other hand, Tweezy and Hendo probably cannot wear gym shorts in public until May.

Whereas most of the people I've observed reactions from so far seem to be excited in a way to see what this team can accomplish.

Thanks for clarifying. Thought that's what you meant but weren't sure.

It's a good point. A bit of it may be the way American fans tend toward clubs in the world's "Top 10" as far as money/prestige since that's what is mainly marketed here.

Chinese and Eastern European NBA fans may have been overjoyed to see the Heat make a "super team".

I wonder how actual German fans of other teams feel?

I've noticed that a lot Spanish fans seem the opposite of Italians insofar as the hatred they have for players who leave their teams for the "Big 3" and also vehemently pulling for any of those big 3 to always lose in Europe, no matter who they play.

Not sure how German fans are in this regard. Maybe they're just resigned to Bayern being the boss.

Seems strange that this would come out with a potential Dortmund/Munich CL Final matchup still in the cards...

HOW IN THE CRAP are Bayern going to play Muller, Kroos, Gotze, Martinez, Shaqiri, Schweinsteiger, Gustavo, etcccc in the midfield ASSUMING that Ribery and Robben are gone?

ETA: hahah accidentally read PLAY as PAY... so all this below doesn't talk about playing time lol

Well first of all, Ribery is NOT leaving this summer or next summer or probably even the summer after that, he will in all likelihood retire at Bayern. They are able to afford all these players, plus turn a profit because they are very soundly run and are a huge club. Their finance chief is retiring this summer and he's almost single handedly responsible for the financial prowess of Bayern Munich. The club has a shite ton of money and is only making more, they are NOT worried about finances, trust me. They are 81.8% owned by their fans with Audi and Adidas each owning 9.1%. It is rumored that someone (likely Gazprom) will be buying another 10% this summer.

Doubtful anyone will be added to the midfield to be honest. The midfield is world class.

re: DER BOMB Götze to Bayern de Munich

the days off FC-Hollywood are over, the locker room is so harmonious that i'm actually wondering if the whole lot of them are just gay. Like seriously it's absolutely ridiculous how well they ALL get along.

Bayern used to only poach Bundesliga talent, but the last 3 years or so they've kind of gone away from that policy in effort to only recruit world class talent in hopes of winning another champions league. Gotze is too good not to grab if the only thing in the way is a release clause. I can't believe BVB would even have one for him that's under 50mm or something outrageous.

Reus will likely stay in Dortmund for his career in my opinion. He's born and raised in Dortmund and played for their youth team from aage 7-17, went out to prove himself and now he's back.

I think the timing might've had something to do with taking attention off Uli Hoeness's dumb arse evading taxes. The tax evasion is a massive massive story in Germany. He's very well known public figure and has even spoke out about people in Spain (i think, them or France) not paying taxes and burdening their government. He's also buddy buddy with Merkel, if I'm not mistaken.

yeah it really sucks when your club has a sweet youth academy and has, what after this season will be 10 consecutive years of straight profit.

If your club was a super team, you wouldn't have that opinion.

re: DER BOMB Götze to Bayern de Munich

Also funny how different reactions are in soccer when a club builds a superteam vs say the NBA for example.

It's a little different in this situation...

Lebron was the best player in the world going to a very good team, joined by a veteran talent (Wade) and a complimentary player (Bosh). Should also be noted they make up 60% of what's on the floor, not less than 10%.

Götze is a fantastic young talent, but not the best player in the world, IMO (though he was on a ton of radars this spring) going to one of the best teams in the world.

If I had to compare the move, RVP's move to the Reds is more like Lebron's, while Götze's move is more like Nash going to the Lakers (though I hope it turns out better than that!)

Nevertheless....I think it's nearly impossible to compare since the two sports are so different...good topic though...

ETA: spelling

ETA2: Nash is older, so maybe not the perfect comparison..open to other suggestions.

This. Really just a silly purchase to me unless they plan on unloading some of that midfield elsewhere. Maybe Shaqiri??? Idk

re: DER BOMB Götze to Bayern de Munich

how is it silly? Operating under the assumption that Pep will use a false 9 (no one knows what he'll do) then he just bought a striker. For those unaware Gotze has started at the false 9 and played well the last 2 maybe 3 WCQ.

If 4-3-3 then
Martinez
schweiny kroos
Muller gotze Ribery

See that wasn't too hard now was it

Goose is good, but not better than the other 3, he'll provide cover. Shaq arrived less than 12 months ago and has stupid incredible stats considering his amount of starts, safe to say he will not be leaving.

According to a 2011 Spiegel article, Mario actually lived in Houston as a 3 year old.. Oh man, what could've been.
