Thinking of Moving West - I guess CO is out

My wife and I have been wanting to move out west for a while now. We're finally taking a trip out there this summer. We're going to CO with some friends who are from there. But, we plan to drive around and look at some other places.

Now, with all the gun talk lately, I've soured on CO, as beautiful as it is. Am I right in ruling CO out? I know that's really what my wife has in mind right now. I can probably sway her to another state though if I have a good argument.

Anyway, I like Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, New Mexico, and maybe Utah and Arizona.

I'd like to hear any and all opinions of these states.

Even if they replace the current pols in 2014 and repeal the recent legislation, I would say CO is f'd from a freedom perspective.

I would stay away from NM and Arizona.

Shame about CO, though. Really an awesome place.

They are all beautiful. How long do you want your winter to last?

Idaho is great. Just have to pick an area that has jobs. Montana and Wyoming are incredible but limited careers fields.

Eta
Colorado is also beautiful. More economic potential there than most other rocky mountain states.

Utah for warm or Idaho for cold. Tough to beat those two in the lower 48.

I do too. Look at Sandpoint, Kellogg, Stanley, Wallace if you are interested in small towns

Bend Oregon is another great town, but its a bit larger.

I'm more interested in game for my hawk than the weather.

Also, now that I think about it, I may have done this thread here last year.

Oregon might be a good option for you. There are two very different side of the state....west of the cascades (wetter, cooler summers) and east of the cascades(hotter and drier). It's beautiful like CA, great outdoors action and not quite as liberal as CA. (psst...stay away from CA, it'll make you crazy)

Yeah. Willamette Valley is mild, East of the Cascades is more temperate but dry. Bend has access to high desert and the Cascades and over 300 days of sun.

If you have family in Bama and would be flying back home to visit. Or them flying to visit you keep in mind flights can get expensive to some locations. Anywhere Montana is expensive to fly I know that from experience, Wyoming about the same unless you want to drive up from Denver. Denver, Salt Lake and Albuquerque are reasonable flights.

Probably wouldn't come back to AL too often. I just have my parents and sister. I only see them a few times a year, as it is. My wife doesn't like her family.

I'm hoping to have my own business started before we actually move - likely based online. My wife is a yoga instructor, and soon-to-be health coach. So, she'll need clients.

Yes I remember the thread now

If I was you I would load up the truck and take a three week trip. Go to the places that interest you. See what the towns look like. You will find a spot you like.

That's basically what we're going to do. We probably won't get to stay that long this summer, but I'm sure we'll go back before we actually move.

I just thought I'd mention it here (forgetting I already had) and see if anybody brought up anything about these states that I didn't know - like they hate falconers or yoga instructors or something.

They generally hate bammers but if the wife is looking good in those yoga pants, all transgressions will be forgotten.

She would do well in Oregon.

I guess I need to visit there. It always comes up in my search for places to move, but for whatever reason, I'm resistant to Oregon. Maybe I have a false impression of it.

Very diverse state. The Cascades are the dividing line in more than one way.

I've got a lot of friends down there and they are good people.

Look at Joseph/Enterprise in the NE corner (near Washington and Idaho) and Bend. Willamette Valley is the Banana Belt. Klamath Falls or Grants Pass in the Southwest

I live in AZ and you will not find a more friendly gun state.

Open Carry: legal
Concealed Carry: legal without a permit (permits available)

If you have a ccw, then you can purchase a firearm without a background check.

Lots of game for your hawk!

If you like the desert, Southern AZ is great, but its not all hot an dry here. The northern part of the state has some awesome mountains, etc.

It's a pretty great place to live!
