I do agree with this. I made my first trip to Gatlinburg back in July and this was one of the few things I enjoyed about the area. The peak at the North Carolina/Tennessee border is pretty cool too.

Chimney tops trail was closed last week and in February.

Any recommendations for cabins in that area? I'm bringing the family this summer.

Parkside Cabin Rentals, Jackson Mountain Homes, Chalet Village are a few good larger companies. Tons of variety with them.

And to all the G-Burg haters

I really like the Wears valley area. I get it isn't for all. I used Black Bear Hollow to rent through.

It was very inexpensive. But you can get deals all over. There are cabins on Loop road in Gatlinburg that feel much more remote than they are.

I like that area, because its a neat drive and a good way to get from East Parkway to raring forks and vise versa without going on the main parkway which can be a parking lot.

I would just use google and price out options.

jackson mountain home and gatlingburg falls are the last 2 we used for cabin retals.

Just decide what area you want to stay in, choose some different cabins to compare based on your preferences, and then choose. They all are pretty much the same.

One thing I will add about and cabins off of Loop road... Be sure to ask your rental company about the quality of the road your cabin is on. That area is notorious for piss poor road construction. Both Cade's Cove Way and Chimney Tops Way are both currently undriveable due to settling and erosion issues.

I wouldn't stay there in the winter. But I just drove the road last week, it wasn't bad just a lot of steep drops, but tame compared to Colorado roads.

Take the longest helicopter tour that you can afford. It's a must do every time we go. Last time we had a young pilot just out of the military. He followed one of the hiking trails from a parking lot to a waterfall and hovered in front of it for a minute or two. Then we circled Cade's Cove.

how much was it? I wanted to do this, but thought it may be too much.
I also thought the park was a no-fly area and you couldn't fly below 5,000 feet above the park.

I never saw a helicopter in the park.

I would love to do it though. You pass three or four helicopter places on the drive in from exit 407 to G-burg.

Just got back Sunday night. Had a blast. Every time we drove into Pigeon and passed Friendly Falls, we thought about stopping, but never did.
If anyone wants to open a pancake house, Pigeon's where it's at. There seemed to be a shortage of old fashioned flapjacks.

And each time we saw a zip-line sign, I thought of this.. ZIPLINEEEE

So you stayed off of 321? That is my favorite area. I could see living in Wears Valley.

Next time I'm going to Friendly Falls.

But I had picky kids, who only eat chicken fingers, pizza, salad or tacos with me.

Abrams falls and the aquarium are excellent. I also enjoyed the moonshine distillery, you can try free samples of all their flavors.

This is the cabin we rented. It's in a very good location off of Wears Valley rd that lets you bypass all the traffic on the main parkway between Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge, Cades Cove etc. if you look up Happy Hollow rd on google maps it is back up the mountain from that road. The guy we rented from at Volunteer Cabin Rentals moved there from Zachary about 10-15 years ago. I think his name was Ted. When he found out we were coming from Baton Rouge he spent a lot of time telling me about things to do and things to avoid.

if you can ever plan a trip around seeing the synchronous fireflies in the Elkmont GSMNP it is a must do. By far one of the top things to witness all of these fireflies in harmony. It only occurs in there and somewhere in Asia.
