"Pour Some Sugar on Me" turns 25 years old this month...

All these anniversary threads got me to thinking.

For Def Leppard fans who will be out West, there a still a few dates on the "VIVA! Hysteria" series in Vegas, although I'm not going to be able to make it.

The album didn't move until Sugar was released. As a Def Leppard fan since at least 1982 (pre-Pyromania, at least), I was not as stoked about Sugar as many were - but it brought a whole new group of fans to band. For a brief period of time there, they were, arguably, the biggest rock band in the world.

Good times...

Phil admits he ripped the whole thing off from "I Love Rock and Roll" - which is pretty funny when you think about it.

My favorite track from Hysteria remains "Women". I also love "Gods of War" and the title track.

At the time of the Pyromania "cassette" days, it was one of only 3 cassettes in my Olds Omega that I played for a year straight. Don't want to mention the other 2. It was great then but I can't hardly listen to them anymore. I got burnt out as you can imagine with only 3 cassettes. Poor man I was.

He lost the other in a car wreck but that couldn't keep him down. He said the wreck never hurt when it happened and severed his arm because it was so cold when the wreck went down.

Honestly, it was the only song I liked on that album. Such a dramatic change from "High and Dry."

It is no secret they're my favorite band. However, when you listen to "On Through the Night" - it was clear they were just kids. "High and Dry" (Mutt Lange's influence) could have just as easily been an AC/DC album, and they were 10 years younger. That was originally recorded with Clark/Willis as the guitar duo and clearly had a much harder edge than the Leps would maintain.

"Pyromania" remains my favorite album, and "Photograph" my favorite song - the album has much to offer a hard rock fan, but had that melodic balance that is so often absent in heavy music.

"Hysteria" showed a level of maturity and meticulous production value for kids who were just approaching 30 (again, Mutt as the perfectionist) - however, a certain amount of the energy from those earlier albums - particularly the previous 2, seems to have left them as well. Allen had lost an arm and Clark was in the process of losing his life, but the band's core influences of early 70s glam, mixed with a little Queen and Zeppelin had glossed over their earlier NWOBHM sound.

I like all their stuff (except that terrible song "All Night), but I like the guys, their stories and they remain an outstanding live act - I saw them in 2011 with Heart in New Orleans, they were as good they were 20 years previously.

My son, who will be 26 in June, would stop whatever he was doing and run (toddle) towards the TV when MTV would play this song (at almost the same time daily when the video was their #1 vid of the week).

Probably why I liked it. It was my favorite album of theirs by far, and had some great tunes including the title cut.

I will typically listen to the "Big 3" of Leppard albums all the way through - High n' Dry, Pyromania and Hysteria - each has its merits and each has a more organic feel, which was relatively common at the time - the residual effect of the great period for albums was still in effect when these records were made. Efforts were made to make the entire album listenable, rather than just filler to get 2 or 3 hits to the public. Hysteria was done at the tail end of that era.

I'll challenge you to do this - pull one of those great albums, I like Fleetwood Mac - Rumours as a good choice. Listen to that album and see if you don't say, "G-ddamn! That would be an entire 15 or 20 year career for most recording artists today."

No doubt. Many people trash some of those groups today, but if they were releasing that music in the current time they would easily be the biggest thing out there.

I remember being about five years old with a hand help radio to my ear blaring PSSOM. I was born in 83'
Do I think it's a great song? No. But it brings me back to a time and place still, all these years later.
