Which Rookies will Rise Next Season?

quote:

Some players are clearly drafted based on potential and are not yet ready to help a team. But there are also times when a player is ready to help, yet the team is not ready to play the player, perhaps because a stubborn coach trusts only veterans, or because veteran players are ahead of the rookie in the rotation. Either way, rooks who don't put up big numbers are not even remotely doomed to a career of obscurity.

re: Which Rookies will Rise Next Season?

This may seem crazy, considering how poorly Rivers played all season before he got hurt -- bad shooter, bad finisher and not a good passer -- but he has the ability to earn good looks. His attacking angles were spot on, as were his change-of-speed moves and many of his reads off ball screens.

The problem was his finishing maneuvers, which were off balance or poorly timed and rarely powerful. But balance, power and timing are all actual strengths of his game -- at least they were until he got to the NBA, where he encountered the size, length and speed issues that haunt many young guards.

But Rivers is known to have a huge drive to work hard, so it stands to reason that coming off a season like this will push him to new heights. More pull-up jumpers and fewer floaters and shots at the rim against bigs will be a huge step in the right direction and something most guards can easily grasp.

Rivers showed some flashes as a 3-point shooter, and when that part of his game starts clicking, then everything will open up for him even more. He may need to improve more than any other rookie to become a rotation player, but his ceiling is far higher than that. It would be a surprise not to see huge improvement from Rivers next season.

Brian Roberts is 3rd in their Top 50 Rookie rankings. AD #2.

Is that a typo? Because it looks like you just said he had Roberts ranked 3rd

Thorpe was supposed to be on WWL radio today. I missed it but they should post it on their website soon

Thorpe is the guy that a few weeks ago said something like college players should study how he runs the Pick and Roll.

Rivers has nowhere to go but up, I have my doubts that he can be anything more than a Lou Williams type that provides offense on a second unit, he does have youth on his side though

Ryno is an excellent 3 point shooter and rebounder that scores 16 a game? Trade him.

Vasquez is 3rd in the league in APG and leads the league in total assists? Trade him.

Gordon leads the team in PPG and is a good perimeter defender? Trade him.

Why? Well, we need to try to get talent, obviously.

He is also a subpar defender, plays a position the team is loaded with and is one of the highest paid bench players in the league.

Also a bad defender, dominates the ball and can't play with the 3rd guy you listed. Also, plays a style the coach can't stand and wants to get away from next year.

Actually a great player, but is massively injury prone and is way overpaid. Plus now it is out in the open that he doesn't get along with management..

I love the team too, but they suck. It's not a good team right now. They need more/different pieces and it's alright to think about how the team can and will change. I'd love to hear how you would improve it, but I'm sure you just want to sit on what they have and ride it out. That's just boring..

We cant keep this cycle of player turnover. We have good pieces. Can't always trade away our good players.

True enough. Monty has suggested we should expect some turnover this offseason, but at some point you've got to hang onto the good pieces you have.

Who are the good pieces and untouchable in your view?
