re: Wide Receiver concerns

Colston
Moore
Morgan
Toon
Graham
Watson

I'm fine with these. We can use a late rounder to get a backup, but we have much bigger needs than WR with our 15th pick.

Austin is a smoke screen to try to get other teams to trade back with. He isn't even the best overall WR in the draft. Even though Payton never quite does what is expected from the fans with the draft, I would bet we are not picking a WR at #15.

We have had top 5 offenses the last few years and the worst defense in the history of the NFL last year. We might go BPA, but it will be Best Defensive Player Available.

You don't even have a 5 deep for wr listed. If one guy gets dinged up you're down to 3 actual wr that you trust with one of them never playing a down so far.

And while we were up their statistically on offense we were not one of the 5 most consistent offenses by any stretch. We often padded our stats late in games when the other teams had a two score lead after our offense would go stagnant for 2 quarters and our D would just break along the way. We need an influx of talent fairly soon. Whether that comes from toon or Morgan remains to be seen.

Which is why you draft someone in later rounds like I stated (or sign an avg WR in FA).

Maybe so, but we have been one of the worst defenses. Even with the Super Bowl team, we had turnovers, but statistically, we weren't that great. Last year proved we can still score enough and with Payton coming back we should be fine, but we need desperate help on defense. Picking a WR with the 15th pick, you had better be picking a sure fire dominant WR. I don't see a Calvin Johnson in this draft.

I agree with all of this St. Aug. Although a solid defense will help keep the pressure off of Brees, I believe we are already much improved on D with the current roster and scheme. I personally hope we either go LT or BPA defense and pick up a WR later in the draft if need be however

I don't doubt they will take a WR in the draft and in FA but in the first round I don't see anyone they could be thinking highly of...I keep going back in my kind to what CSP said keeps him up at night.

I agree with that. While Austin is a legit playmaker I really want us to get our Green, Julio, Dez, Demayrius type to groom. Unfortunately those guys usually go early unless they are some kind of criminal/off field issues type of player

re: Wide Receiver concerns

just throwing in that methinks Watson brings more legit TE threat as a secondary target than we've seen in a while. I expect Payton to have some fresh play designs for two TE sets to a degree we have not seen before. So there's some fresh receiving impact.

It's not exactly throw any old body out there and Brees will make them an All Pro. It is closer to that though than we desperately needing some good WRs for our poor QB (like the Jets). There's only so many big cap dollars to spread around. With Brees (and his salary) at the helm I doubt we'll ever see big free agent bucks devoted to a WR. Draft'em and see what ya can develop.

A lot of yapping for a LT around here. I count it as a given that this ain't happening at #15. None of the Top 3 will be around and there is a chasm in LT value after that. Any round later and there's plenty of guys that could come in and compete- like Faulk or Terron Armstead.

frick worrying about WR's

The defense sucks and needs to be fixed and we have Brees at QB and a running game we never use so if the WR's have a dropoff it will force Payton to finally use the running game.

Let's all be thankful on this Holy Saturday that Hericane Mike does not work in the Saints FO or on the coaching staff. WR is a concern if not this year, then certainly next year. Depends on who drops to us, if we can pick up McKinnie and a backup up QB in FA, anything is possible. Defense is shaping up IMHO. Trading back if a starter is not available opens up a lot of options.

are we really set at wide receiver?

As long as Brees can squeeze out 5,000 yard seasons, I don't think the FO is too worried about the WR position. If there's a sleeper in the 6 or 7 round (like Colston), they may take a flier on him.

Yeah, throwing 45 times a game is where its at.

The WRs blow. That's probably why they flex Graham out so much. But some say it's a matchup thing. When Lance Moore is your #2 you have issues. I don't know 5 other teams where that guy would start.

I think we are ok at receiver, but not that great. What really needs to happen is have that balance with the run game. That's when we are REALLY good. If the run game is a threat, then it opens up a lot for our receivers. Much more space to work with.

He's throwing "45 times a game" because the running game sucks and/or underutilized...not because the WRs are a concern.

The point is why he's getting 5000 yards. That shouldn't be used to justify our receivers.

drew pressed to hard last year because of our defense. he knew they were not stopping anybody. also the first half of the season our running game was non-existent. CSP will run the ball more this year to get back to a balance, ball control and dictating tempo. That is who he is. The best offensive coordinator in the game that understands his offense controlling tempo. Give Drew a 5th round Wr who has good hands and has great route running and will see another Colston.
