Of course he was playing. Chief always likes to rotate players into a game and Hatcher was a guy who could give you good backup snaps

no, he was terrible.

Who did Chief rotate in at MLB last year with Minter since he loves to rotate so much?

Nobody. Til he had Welter. Which is my point.

He rotated at the other two positions and has always rotated LBs until last season. Tells you he didn't think the freshmen were ready to handle the MLB responsibilities. The spring tells you he still thinks that way.

This is probably about right, with the top six all getting some play time depending on how they develop between now and then. I think that the LB position will only get better with time.

Could someone kill this stupid thread?

When people are trying to defend the play of Hatcher, it really is time to move on.

Not defending the play of Hatcher, defending the decisions made by Chavis.

Maybe Chavis should have taken a bigger role in recruiting if Hatcher was the best option he could come up with...just saying.

Interesting observation, considering that (again), LSU went 3-0 with Hatcher starting, including wins over two ranked teams, while giving up only 12 ppg, 27 coming from Oregon.

By week 4, he had Minter in the starting lineup and never looked back. I would not say, judging from the results of that season both in terms of the position's performance and the defense in general, that the MLB position was mis-handled by the coaches.

the trouble with reading bios and then pretending that you watched the games is that you get it wrong. Hatcher didn't start against Oregon, and apparently Chavis did look back because he started Hatcher in week 7 against Tennessee. But go on.

Youre talking about the season where Hatcher had 23 total tackles and 15 of them were assists? and in the 3 games that we were 3-0 he had a whopping 7 tackles?

How did the team make such a run without him in the starting lineup? Should be on Ripleys Believe it or Not...

So because we won that means our MLB play was up to snuff? Why would you not do everything in your power to minimize the team's weaknesses (i.e. Hatcher stepping onto the field)? Also, just because a mistake was made before that doesn't mean we should make the same one again this year. The fact of the matter is that Welter isn't one of our top 3 linebackers at this time and it has nothing to do with race. I am white and I just want the best players on the field so that we have the best chance of winning as many games as possible.

Was it a mistake? Was starting Hatcher early part of Minter's development?

Again, the point is, Chief knows what he's doing in developing players. It's much different from the offensive criticism where personnel decisions were shown to have direct consequences on the results.

Yeah, forgot Minter got the start in the opener. Didn't play great, if I recall.

Tennessee scored seven. Meaning in the three games Hatcher started, LSU gave up 16 points and one touchdown.

Of course, you'll draw the wrong conclusion from that observation. No, Hatcher did not put the defense on his back those three games and carry it to a great performance. But by the same token, starting Hatcher over Minter for those three games certainly did not hurt the defense's result and may have helped with the development of Minter. There was probably a good reason why Chief started Hatcher in those games and we may never really know what it is because nobody's going to throw Kevin under the bus to tell it.

I'm not suggesting he did anything wrong. Maybe it was simply a lesson the importance of the play-calling roll of the MLB. Maybe it was about the work habits Chief expected from his MLB.

The point is. Chief has his reasons to start Hatcher and to start Welter now (at least in the spring). To assume it's just a blind spot or blind loyalty to a particular player is just kind of dumb.

I would bet alot of money that Debo Jones would make A LOT more plays than Welter at MLB or OLB or anywhere. Ya Ya...DJ understands things better and calls plays better etc etc...

I just cant wait to see Debo get serious PT...gonna be nasty
