I agree with ya' about Hatcher...a good guy without a position...it happens...Chief and Miles are too loyal sometimes to seniors....jmho

If anything some of you should be more concerned about Barrow's inconsistent pass coverage ability...it's all a work in progress...

Ok Jalen Collins had 5 pass break ups last season Kevin Minter had 5 Eric Reid had 7 Tharold Simon had 9 and Barrow had 5 does not scream inconsistency to me

why would chief put in Hatcher over Minter for most of 2011?

False. Hatcher started the first three games, which included wins over two ranked teams. Minter starated the fourth game against West Virginia and never looked back.

If you ask me, this is exactly where LSU is now. Minter was obviously more talented than Hatcher, but Hatcher had years of understanding the defense and making calls over Minter. Once it became evident that Minter was ready to make all the calls, Chief went with the talent starting in the West Virginia game.

Certainly, the defense didn't suffer for having Hatcher in the starting lineup. In the three games Hatcher started, LSU gave up 36 points, 27 of them against Oregon (which included a late, meaningless TD). In the last two games Hatcher started, LSU did not give up a TD.

That tells me that, while Hatcher struggled physically, the right calls were getting made and the LBs were in place to make the proper plays consistently.

watch more games instead of just reading stats and thinking you know anything. Watch the November 2011 Bama game and tell me who is out there missing tackles like its going out of style. Hint: not Minter.

Hatcher had been a safety until 2011, and he even started out as a Sam backer (which is where I thought he should have been - prob over Stef - for all of 2011).

I love Chief, but at times he makes some questionable calls, that being probably the most glaring one I can think of from a personnel standpoint. I know, yada yada yada, no coach is perfect. no really, I know that.

back to you Jimmy!

Exactly right...and that's similar to where we are now with the LBs...six different LBs will play a lot of football this year...that's healthy for depth...

the one a couple plays later where he gets lost before the snap, barrow has to basically push him out of the way and then he gets pushed 5 yards to the side and pancaked is promising

bamas o-line last season is not the same as any other team in NCAA history. He got manhandled along with everyone else.

Tell me this: How did his decision hurt the defense? Was it such a poor decision that Oregon ran roughshod over them? Did Mississippi State take advantage?

Look, I'm not a Chief apologist by any stretch. But the man knows what the hell he's doing here. I don't think he has any blind loyalty to D.J. Welter, nor did he for Karnell Hatcher.

It was, considering your comeback was something a long the line of "but, but ... he was still getting snaps against Alabama and missing tackles."

Of course he was playing. Chief always likes to rotate players into a game and Hatcher was a guy who could give you good backup snaps, although as he sucked more, his snaps diminished.

You make it sound like he was starting Rudy over Bo Jackson and sticking with that decision through thick and thin. It wasn't like that at all.

This is Spring...by Fall it will all sort itself out. I don't think Welter is one of the top three LBs. But he will be needed to back up at some point in the season. So now is the time to work him as hard as possible to push and get the best from when he is needed.

Welter has been described as 'tough as nails' and 'hits like a ton of bricks'. I think this is what Cheivis likes about him as a starter

This could be true. I think he can slide Barrow over to he middl at any time in August, then let a young LB slide over to the weak side spot.

What I'm anticipating is, by the start of SEC play, Barrow is the starting MLB, but Welter is playing at least 2-3 series, maybe more, as a backup. He'll play more if Chief decides that Barrow can slide back over to the weak side for a couple of series the way Kelvin Sheppard (wasn't it Kelvin?) used to move around the various linebacker positions.

If that's the case, I can see a situation where Welter plays 3-4 series, a couple to give Barrow a rest, and a couple while Barrow is on the weak side.
