I was talking about the Chiefs throwing in some late round picks since we would be giving up our first.

Oh I see. Misunderstood what you were saying there. Even with that said I really don't think we should give up our first round pick. Too much defensive talent in the draft and we need a playmaker on the defensive side of the ball badly.

It frustrates me we can't afford a legit starting left fricking tackle.

If we pass on Asomugha, I think we can probably squeeze McKinnie in for one or two seasons. That would still give us the option to pick up Johnson if he's there at 15 and ease him in at RT while McKinnie was still on the team.

I like you Hugo, but if we can't afford him how is this even in the discussion?

Just something to talk about, and it's not impossible but I agree it would probably be too costly a move.

We could always talk about Fay Shell. I hear she's the top Saints off-season topic anyway.

You want to piss away yet ANOTHER first round pick? So two years in a row, in a league where winners are built in the draft, you want to not have a first OR second round pick in back to back drafts? For a position that has been proven over 7 years with the current staff that we don't "need" a pro-bowler and a player who, while proven, has also been inconsistent. If he was so great everyone wouldn't have the Chiefs taking a LT first overall. When we had the worst defense EVER. I agree we need a LT, and I also agree that I'd like to see a better player there than we've had in the past. But absolutely, positively no possible way I'm trading our first rounder this year unless it's to move back and acqure more picks. We've handcuffed ourselves enough with drafts

A starting proven LT for Drew in the prime of his career would not be pissing away.

I want Super Bowls, the same a you.

The window on Drew Brees is going to start closing in the near future and if we can't adequately protect him, who gives a frick about the defense.

I hope and pray you are right.

Because Joeckel is a can't pass up talent.

He will lock up their LT spot for the long haul and would be a cheaper option than signing Albert again in the short term.

When we had the worst defense EVER.

This is so overblown, the defense was bad but had several bright spots.

They did shut out the Bucs without a head coach and a defensive coordinator the players reportedly hated and didn't gel well with.

A first round draft pick is not going to solve the defense's problems over night.

I understand this, I think the majority of Saints fans are with you here and so am I to a certain extent.

I'm just throwing this scenario out on the table to be batted around and probably down.

I somewhat agree. For Drew to be successful he has to be able to move up into the pocket. That usually means your center and guards have to be good at working in tandem, which is the case for the Saints fortunately.

Another thing to factor in is the type of guard the Saints need. A guard that is quick on his feet is essential to the screen game. If we don't find someone about the same size and speed as Bushrod, we will be handicapped in utilizing a major facet of our offense.

Because Brees is a pocket passer and has to utilize his positioning to see downfield, a smaller/faster tackle is better at helping to encapsulate the outer edges of the pocket. If you can't you get maybe 2-3 seconds before the pocket collapses from the outside.

While I agree, Brees' mobility gives us the benefit that we don't need a high-dollar tackle; you can't just throw any old average Joe in that position.

re: Trade Our First Pick to the Chiefs for LT Brandon Albert?

As much as I want a legit LT or RT for brees where he doesn't have to make them look great, I just think this draft we have an opportunity to get something that can change this team around. We haven't had a mid-1st round draft pick since before the superbowl year with jenkins. That year we got some great FA pickups and an opportunistic defense. Hopefully this year is the same with some new young blood.

Yes I know, chances are 1 drafted player won't make such an impact on our horrid defense, but we did improve in certain aspects of the game through FA too. I just want to think like this, imagine if someone that was so highly touted like star, jarvis, dion, or mingo fell down to us. We could potentially have our future demarcus ware, clay matthews, aldon smith, haloti ngata, etc for the first time in a while. I'm shooting for the stars of course, but potential is what we need for a change to make this team mid-tier defense. Brees will always carry our offense, we just need to keep a 20ish defense surrendering <25points and we should probably win at least 11-12 a year

We clearly had the opportunity to pay for a left tackle in free agency. That was after we decided to pass on a free agent on our team.

It is pretty clear, that the organization doesn't want to spend a ton of money at that position. I don't know why we would change our minds a couple of weeks into free agency and then give away a first round pick as well.

Bingo, they already have cut good paychecks to the guards, one will be going to the center (hopefully) next year. You can't pay everyone big bucks on your line and expect to have decent weapons to give the ball to and a non-terrible-record-setting defense.

It's a tough choice, no doubt. While a stud LT for Drew would be nice, it would cost big $$. QB, LT, DE are usually the highest paid players. While I'd love to have a top of the line LT, I simply think we need defense too much right now. IMO, one LT won't change the offense that much, if at all. One elite pass rusher could totally revamp the defense. Using a first round pick on either is a risk but I'd rather take the risk on defense.

I'm totally against taking an OL in the first round, HOWEVER, if we were to somehow trade down in to the low 20s and a highly graded tackle slipped to us, I break as many items as if we traded for/drafted one at 15. Assming we pick up a 2nd rounder obviously.

Honestly, if we had any QB other than Drew, I probably wouldn't mind as much taking a LT or even with the trade you proposed. But Drew is the best in the league at feeling pressure and getting rid of the ball quickly. Even with medicore play at LT he didn't take a ton of hits.

If Jones/Mingo/Jordan were somehow at 15 and we took a tackle.....I may throw a brick thru my window.
