Maybe heterosexual relationships are preferred because homosexual relationships can't ensure our very existence and survival.

I'm fairly certain heterosexual relationships are not threatened in any way by homosexual relationships.

Well you're certainly entitled to your concerns about your children as I am with mine. Personally, though, I fail to see how children will be harmed by thinking it's "normal".

By the way, this leads to the discussion of the distinction between "normal" (statistically) and "natural" (as in naturally occurring).

Well it's not something I deem as naturally occurring

But, to each his own..

Doesn't need to be defined as marriage, find something else to call ..

It's likely that Kinsey had it about right. To the extent that children might be a 2, 3, 4, or 5 on the Kinsey Scale, do you think encouragement of gay lifestyle as a choice could alter their lives?

so that makes it right to bless gay marriage?

Horrible logic

And you can not proof it won't have a damaging effects on our society...

I was afraid of this. They aren't ready.

And if they follow the law they will never be ready. There is no constitutional "right" to marriage. The constitution is silent on the subject. Therefore, state may regulate the practice as they see fit. This is not murdering babies. This is one which will have to be won at the ballot box.

I didn't say it was "normal", at least not statistically. That's why I made the distinction above. Left handed people aren't the "norm". Neither is dwarfism. However, both phenomena occur "naturally" in that no one decides to be left handed (typically at least) or to be a dwarf. Rather, those phenomena occur as a result of genetics, naturally occurring external factors, etc.

This is completely irrelevant to the issue. The Supreme Court has determined that discrimination is okay when there is a compelling state interest. I would think survival of the species is as compelling an interesst as you could find. Passing policies that encourage propagation of the species would seem likely to pass Supreme Court scrutiny unless there are mitigating factors that the Supreme Court feels should be taken into account. I don't think fairness is one of them.

No, I was responding to a poster who posited the position that homosexual relationships can't ensure our survival. And I pointed out that allowing homosexual relationships did not interfere with heterosexual couples producing babies.

quote:

You're asking me to prove a negative. Tough to do. I suggest that the burden of proof is upon those who wish to prevent gay marriage because of its alleged harm to society.

How in the everloving frick is allowing gay people to marry interfering with heterosexual couples propagating the species?

ETA: Your post is contradictory in and of itself. On one hand you say this issue is irrelevant and on the other say it represents a compelling state interest.

Interestingly, if this does happen would this establish a precedent that any state that currently has gay marriage could not outlaw it
As you probably know, there was not nor is there now any real threat of "outlawing" gay marriage. So that's not an issue.

Walker, if upheld, would seem to guarantee preservation of civil recognition of gay marriage. However, it does not seem to preclude modifications in status of that recognition. For example in the hypothetical, antigay parties could convince state government to tax gay married couples differentially (punitively) under some BS auspice. Hopefully folks would be civil enough not to go there, but the door is not closed.

By the way, when folks have referred to the possibility of gay activists attacking the church, this is NOT what they had in mind

As usual, you have it bass ackwards.

Since a man and a woman who are a couple ensure our very existence and survival and homosexual couples don't, the SCOTUS could rule that a law allowing only a man and a woman to marry each other and get the benefits and privileges associated with marriage is constitutional.

It would be a bad argument, since you don't have to be married to continue the human race, and they would still get these privileges otherwise, and people without kids get these privileges as well.

Irrelevant.

The distinction between heterosexuality and homosexuality is that heterosexual relationships ensure our very existence and survival.

Homosexual relationships do not ensure our very existence and survival.

I assert that society prefers relationships that ensure our very existence and survival over relationships that don't ensure our very existence and survival.

Now answer this question.

How does society benefit from homosexuality?

It's a great argument.

Heterosexual relationships ensure our very existence and survival.

Homosexual relationships do not ensure our very existence and survival.

Therefore, society which benefits from having its very existence and survival ensured by heterosexual relationships can discriminate in favor of heterosexual relationships by giving a man and a woman benefits and privileges if they marry each other.

1. Homosexuals are happy. Last time i checked they are still members of society. A happier society is usually better.

Left handed people are a "variation within the norm" of heterosexual people with two hands and two legs.

Dwarfism is a "variation within the norm" of heterosexual people with two hands and two legs.

A "variation within the norm" is still being normal.

Homosexuality is not a "variation within the norm" of heterosexual people with two hands and two legs.

Therefore, homosexuality is not normal.
