Then it's needless to change the definition of marriage unless there are other motivations for doing so.

Mother of God. Yeah, that's it. TV's "sympathetic" portrayal of gay people changed everything.

Yeah, it was a big coincidence that polls switched over the last 5 years. You're correct, people are never influenced by what they see or hear in media. The billions spent on advertising are all wasted.

Why not just limit gov'ts scope in marriage and change cohabitation tax laws?

The growth would be minimal. Gays are a very small portion of the population to begin with, and not all of them want to marry.

Still grows gov't which is against a libertarian principle. It looks like there are exceptions.

I'm not sure what you're saying. Some people are
hung up on this definition issue. I guess I find it unimportant. It's the practical effect that really matters. I just see no reason why a gay couple who wish to establish an officially recognized union shouldn't be allowed to do so. And the use of the term marriage shouldn't bother anyone, imo.

Appreciate the non-flaming, but I respectfully disagree that it'll always be involved. Technology is changing and the services of the government (such as monetary policy and management) are being faced by outside competitors.

Sometimes you have to do the right thing before someone else is willing.

So you honestly believe that some sort of media campaign has changed American opinion on the issue of gay marriage? Couldn't it be that our culture has simply evolved just as it did in race relations or other issues? Sure, media plays a part, but it's kind of a chicken or the egg question, imo.

Swinging public opinion by 10-15% points, yes absolutely. You give people far too much credit if you think they would have devoted even an hour of contemplation to the subject over the last 5 years without gay characters being placed front and center.

The issue was lost once TV started having more and more sympathetic gay characters show up in the programming. Marketing.

So, Jake, are you one of those posters who believes that they are among the "right thinking" conservatives and the majority of Americans are sheep who have been led astray? That's kind of egotistical, don't you think?

"It is vital for networks to weave complex and diverse story lines of LGBT people in the different programs they air," said GLAAD President Herndon Graddick. "More and more Americans have come to accept their LGBT family members, friends, co-workers and peers, and as audiences tune into their favorite programs, they expect to see the same diversity of people they encounter in their daily lives."

VOR, I don't care about gay marriage beyond the judge/court shopping done to overturn the votes of the people. That goes for other issues as well. But, I'm also going to point out what is obvious and admitted to in my previous post quoting a gay activist.

Of course gays in the media had an impact. To disagree is either ignorant, or disingenuous. They didn't make Americans say, "Hey, gays are AWESOME. LET EM MARRY" but it may have made them aware that gays actually exist.

It is an example of a very loud, very vocal, very small minority.

Straight don't lose anything but instead of marriage why not call it a civil union for tax purposes. To me marriage is more of a religious thing than government. To me where the rubber meets the road is similar to ACA when the government tells Churches they have to marry same sex couples even if it is against their religious principals. This is why the Catholic Church was against ACA and same sex marriage. If this allows government to dictate to churches who you have to allow to marry it crosses the separation of church and state.

We shouldn't call gay marriage a civil union in a governmental sense unless we redefine all marriages as civil unions in the eyes of the government. Since that is not happening anytime soon (probably ever in our lifetimes) it is stupid IMO to argue semantics re: the word marriage.

Especially when there are plenty of churches that perform and recognize gay marriages.
