re: Trade Back?

Best way to improve a defense is to get to the QB. In a 3-4, that's the OLB position

how many do we need? are 3 not enough?

I'd rather them go for more of the "sure thing" at that spot

There is not sure thing in this draft. Mayok has stated that you can take the top 32 players, shuffle them up and you'd have someone's draft board. He thinks this is made up of all equal players, none stellar. I have seen others make similar statements.

But a strong pass rush is a bad secondary's best friend. I think the Lewis signing was a good investment in the secondary as well.

This is not a bad secondary

If they draft OLB with the 15 pick, then good. If not, then good too. If they trade back, then great. There is no sure fire guy this year, and that means at 15 it's definitely a jumbled mess. It would be fantastic to get more picks in a draft like this to work the percentages in our favor for hitting on a pick, but that's also why it may be difficult to get a trade partner.

re: Trade Back?

I have no problem with them dealing down for more picks or even trading future picks to get back into the second round. The window with this group is small considering Drew's age. The Saints might never again have a QB of this caliber may as well strike while the iron is hot.

re: Trade Back?

Just an FYI the only 'true' 3-4 OLB is Jarvis Jones and he has a little asteriks by his name due to health concerns... Mingo, Jordan, Ansah etc are not any closer to sure thing as gallete or Wilson (who at least have NFL experience under their belt). I'm not saying I would disagree with OLB at #15 but I'm not so sure Mingo or whoever else turns out better than what we already have.

If we get a OLB in this year's draft, we'll be better positioned for the future in both of those two examples. Yes, I know we have a lot of good players projecting to the OLB position. But they will be taking a huge risk by not picking up a true pass rushing OLB when there are so many available in this year's draft.

what makes any of these "true pass rushing olb" better prospects than

1) a young guy who had more NFL sacks at DE (the same position most of these OLB projects played) than these guys had in college

2) a young guy who was extremely efficient actually playing OLB in the current system we will be running

3) a young guy who has very near the athletic ability as the draft picks if not just as much.

I'm not saying don't draft an OLB, but we're not taking any huge risk by not....nor are they any more of a "true" olb prospect than the guys on our roster (save for Jones).

aren't they the main competition for the NFC championship? Is that consideration to NOT trade w/ them and let them take a gamechanger like Austin?

Exactly what I was trying to say. I think the Butler signing takes a little pressure off of the upcoming draft. Maybe LT? Maybe OLB? trade back (if partner) ILB, CB, S, TE, NT?

Also, I really like the current roster on D matched with our new D-Coord/scheme pre-draft so I am more excited than nervous for the upcoming draft now with the saints' few FA's.

we really can take whoever is highest on our board at this point. Lt has to be addressed though.

Trade back

Saints trade the 15 and 109 for the Vikings 25 and 52.

This way the Vikings can get Percy Harvin Part 2 and we draft Jamie Collins and a LT.

re: Trade Back?

I'd have no issue trading back. Assuming the big three pass rushers are gone that is.
