re: Lawmakers introduce bill to void 'Redskins' trademark

Just change the name and "everything will be much better". Never mind it made no difference. Just do it. Distract people with side issues that don't matter while the U.S. is on the verge of economic collapse. Typical of the times we're in.

Exactly. Show me this Viking group who feels it's a slur?

It's all about a victory for their side.
No one with at least a little perspective really cares about this but progressives like DS think this is a victory and leverage.

Wrong. you just seem to lack the mental capacity to tell the difference between the two, which would be obvious to a 5 year old.

That's probably worse. We've completely wiped Native Americans not only from this earth but from our consciousness.

I can't think of any group on the planet that has less political or social power. No wonder no one is offended. Native Americans are merely props in movies or mascots for sports teams.

Actually trying give you more credit. It's obvious that you are about political victories for "your side". I'm trying to point out that you actually are at least competent and know that you can use faux outrage to further your political agenda.

You can't seriously be this sensitive about a football team's name. Then you would be a pussy.

How many times do I have to say that I am not personally offended? It doesn't always have to be about ME.

Wow. You've gone so low that you have to drag out the "attack his manhood" card. Pathetic.

It's not a Viking group, it was CT on the previous page. So, who's allowed to be offended again? Only a group? Of what size? Of what skin color? Of what race?

Are you saying that "Vikings" is ok because they were the aggressors and not the aggrieved? Or because the aggrieved's numbers are too small?

Football teams name themselves after noble, fearful, strong, etc. things
That is why they didn't name themselves the Washington Pussies. But if we are going to change the name that is my suggestion.

I am part Celtic and honoring such a barbaric people is shameful and should not be tolerated. They killed many of my ancestors! If you feel nothing is wrong with this name then you likely would think it was okay to name a team the Nazis. How could you be so insensitive!

This is the problem someone will always find a reason to change the name of an NFL team based on the fact it hurts someones feelings. Hey my son got mauled by a bear. How could be so insensitive to name a team after the animal that killed by baby!

This is fairly simple:

The Redskins should change the name if it truly that offensive to surviving Native American communities.

The government should not have the authority to force sensitivity on private entities.

We are all living in LaLa Land if we think the government does force sensitivity in many aspects of our culture.

I'd be willing to bet the name changes within five years.

I'm saying it's ok in the same way Chiefs is ok. It's honoring a groups heritage.

Would Brooklyn Kike's or Houston Spics be ok to you?

Why do you have such a hard time considering what it's like to be in someone else's shoes? That's a huge personality flaw.

In my opinion, I think you're off base when you try to inextricably link the Redskins name controversy to an overall "progressive" agenda. I see that a lot on this board, i.e., lumping unrelated issues and opinions into a supposed universal political point of view. People who are quite conservative may very well be, and certainly are, offended by the Redskin team name. It doesn't necessarily have much to do with "progressive" politics. It's a messy world out there, and people have varying opinions on different subjects.

I have major problems with people that act overly sensitive about offending others while also supporting things like abortion. It's a gigantic hypocrisy that would be hilarious if it wasnt so sad.

I agree with you. But draconian cast the first stone by saying "that's why you have lost the popular vote 5 out of 6 times." He made it about progressivism.

Draconian Sanctions

I apologize if you've already stated or implied the answer to this, but do you support the government voiding the trademark, or any other government effort to force the name change?

re: Lawmakers introduce bill to void 'Redskins' trademark

The racism industry must be getting low on ideas. Outrage over the name Redskin is reaching. Historically speaking apparently the name Redskin has nothing to do with skin color. It appears to a name caught in modern cultural context.

quote:

In 1932 the football team was originally created and named the Boston Braves. Teams during this time period generally mirrored their baseball counterparts, as was the case with the New York Giants for example. In their first season the Boston Braves had enormous losses in revenue, and it was decided that changes needed to be made. Along with moving the team to Fenway Park in 1933, the Boston Braves changed their name to the Redskins. Now, there are two main theories as to why this name was chosen. First, the team may have wanted a similar name to the remaining baseball team in Boston, the Boston Red Sox. The second and more widely accepted theory is that the team was named Redskins to honor its coach Lone Star Dietz, who was a Native American. In 1937 the team was moved to Washington D.C., and it kept the name, the Washington Redskins.

I don't really care one way or the other ... just killing time. "Kike" and "spic" are both words with four letters. That's about as worked up as I get about it.

Who determines the heritage that is OK to honor versus denigrate? Native Americans generally got screwed in our history. Some are and should be honored for their heritage. Others were complete monsters. Same for Vikings. What is it about the assemblage of letters "Redskins" versus "Vikings" that makes one good and one bad?
