re: Anybody See a Football Game in Tiger Stadium with No Upper Decks?

One of the nice things bout the old TS was that it was always packed & no one left at half time to go party outside. If those fans were still around intact, the new TS would be 10 times more intimidating. That was the TS that The Bear made his famous comments bout, as well as the DT from S.Cal.And, of course, very very few 1:00 pm kickoffs.

I was at that game, a kid at the time, sitting with my dad and brother, 10 rows up in the middle of the end zone seats where the play happened. I've bled purple since that moment.

Yep, my first one at age 6 - Oct. 25, 1969.
LSU 21 Auburn 20. The day my veins turned gold and my blood purple.
We sat in the lower SEZ behind the left pole of the goalposts, the end zone was painted orange with blue "A U" letters. Saw Andy Hamilton catch a halfback pass from Jimmy Gilbert on the first play from scrimmage to our end zone. Had to put my fingers in my little ears. :)
Never forget driving up Airline Hwy past the Snake Farm, Roussel's, Bluebird's, and Hopper's :)

8PM during 60's! Yeah, saw A&M several years (all wins), 69 BAMA, then all 74-77 as student.
Remember used to have band night some games where several bands on field same time for beautiful HT show back then!
Paging Dr. # &^%$$, please report to gate #$%, anyone remember this?

Yep! Also do you remember the drum cadence/song that TGBFTL played when LSU had the ball in between plays?
It went something like: "GOOOO...dum dum dum dum-ta-dum GOOOOO...dum dum dum dum-ta-dum...GOOOO
big Tigers GOOOOO...dum dum dum dum-ta-dum

Also miss Tiger Rag being played after every Tiger TD. Sadly, looks like that is in the past.

The beginning drum cadence before Pre-Game/Hold That Tiger used to be slower also....

I used to walk around in the parking lots before games selling souvenirs from around '77-'82. Carrying that heavy arse board with pennants and pins. Anybody remember those?

Im in. Saw my first LSU game in 1965 and a beating of Tulane by I believe 62 -0 and was hooked ever since. I believe it was my high school year in 1977 or 1978 when the first expansion the original upper West end was started.

Arcannon, Definitely remember seeing those boards with all the souvenirs. I remember my Mom buying me one of the little Tiger Football men that you would pin to your clothes.

Something about that second picture in your post seems wrong, though. The south end zone appears to be all one level without two separate decks, and the outside of the south end looks wrong. It looks like the north end but that's not how the real thing looks. Is that second photo real? It looks like an artist's rendering or a photoshop.

Here's a link to the Advocate article and the picture. No photoshop, real picture of Bert Jones TD beating Ole Miss. The Advocate

I believe he was talking about the second picture in the original post. It's definitely not correct. Must be an artist's rendering. South endzone is not correct.

I remember it well. I was a Boy Scout usher in section 1 - southeast corner. Most of the people seated in that section were visiting fans.

Here's the source from where I found that image, hope this helps explain. LINK

quote:

Aerial view of Tiger Stadium post-1953 renovation, via Louisiana Desitinations
Tiger Stadium was a concrete building and its exterior neo-classical. The expression of the structural bays provided a pleasant rhythm on the façade which wrapped the single-height bowl. The white concrete color palette and the arched structural bay was reminiscent of the original Yankee Stadium, with the symmetry of the single bowl bringing a further harmony to Tiger Stadium. Unfortunately, the continuity of this original exterior was broken in 1978 when an 11,900-seat second deck was built atop the west side of the stadium.

Also my freshman year, and a member of Tiger Band. The ground shook during pregame when we were on the field, with only 68,000 (stadium-published capacity)fans in attendance (over 70,000 in reality.) When Davis caught the pass the stands exploded! We played music in the stands for 30 minutes after the game, and nobody left. The only empty seats were in the Ole Miss section!
