| Anybody See a Football Game in Tiger Stadium with No Upper Decks? (Posted on 3/14/13 at 4:53 pm)
Those were the days! The most beautiful site in a perfect bowl with no upper decks watching LSU beat Ole Miss on the last play of the game with a Bert Jones TD pass! Anyone remember these years/games?

I miss those Saturday nights with no upper deck. I would sit up on the last row center endzone sometimes for a great view of the entire sold out stadium and take it all in. It was cosmic, only thing, the pot smokers were always up there smoking weed. So I was not sure how that was affecting my moment.

Sure. I don't remember them too well as far as who I saw them play, as I would have been about 7. But, I distinctly remember actually going a couple of times then.

Saw games with no upper decks . . . witnessed "Big Red" screaming "Tiger Bait" . . . witnessed Mike IV roaring into the PA system mic (very cool) and played KA fraternity in the Charity Bowl (full pads in Tiger Stadium) with Steve Ensminger as our coach. Lordy! I miss those days. Thanks for the reminder.

Bert Jones to Brad Davis was epic but my favourite of all time is still '71 LSU - Notre "Damn" Dame...28 -8 and the crowd rushed the field and carried Bert Jones and Andy Hamilton off the field afterward !!! By the way....why isn't Andy Hamilton in the LSU Hall of Fame...one of the top receivers in the nation his Jr. and Sr. year ?

I finally acquired a DVD of the '71 Notre Dame game you speak of. It's a tremendous game to watch. You can see parts of the DVD on youtube. That was my first LSU game to ever watch on TV. I left my home state to be a Tiger in Louisiana because of that game. I did not know Andy Hamilton is not in the LSU HOF. I'm stunned!

I saw a few. They began the first u/d expansion while I was a at LSU. That, Chilly Mac-gate, and Ted Schirmer were the hottest scandals on campus at the time.

I saw three games in 1958 when the Tigers won the National Championship. I saw the Tigers beat Hardin-Simmons (20-6), Ole Miss (14-0) and Kentucky (32-7). We bought the tickets the night of the game on the "family plan". Adult tickets were four dollars and my ticket cost fifty cents! This was back in the good ole days when fans actually were on campus to watch the football game. The fans did not leave at half-time for any reason. Ah, for the halcyon days of old.

the "Billy Cannon" plan? :note to admin, not a disparaging comment, Dr. Cannon has often told the story of buying up a section of seats during the summer(during playing days,) and re-selling them as the Tigers gained popularity during the season

Yeah, no distractions of cell phones, social media, texting and all that BS. Just the game and yell as loud as we could so the other team could not hear their signals. I don't even think the benches used hand signals back then, but might be wrong.

Yep, I was a freshman with Billy Cannon in 1956 and lived in the old North Stadium on the West side. Once, I was late for class and when running out of the "dorm", I literaly ran into Paul Dietzel. Nope, I didn't knock him down since I only weighed about 150 pounds.

The family plan I referred to was not the "Billy Cannon" plan. In fact, I have never heard of that plan. The family plan was an offer by LSU Athletic Dept. as a way of getting people into Tiger Stadium.......as this was when sell-outs were the exception and not the rule. After LSU beat Bobby Franklin and Ole Miss, the family plan was no longer a way of getting tickets on the night of the game. Great memories of the "Old Tiger Stadium".......

I went to an Ole Miss game when I was a kid sometime in the late 60's. Then I went to most home games as a student in '76-77 before they completed the West Upper.

Just using that term tongue in cheek, long before the Tiger Mafia Athletic Foundation took over the extortion racket that is todays' way of obtaining tickets, Cannon, while a player, would work during the summer and buy a section of seats, at face, during times, as you pointed out, that sellouts weren't common. As the Tigers became better, and more people wanted to see them, he would sell those tickets on game day. Presumably for a profit. Documented story.
