re: Cranes going up for the SEZ expansion (Updated)

They're fixed cranes with site built foundations, which are very typical in large construction jobs. There was a thread last month showing the pictures of the foundations.

They are called tower cranes. They are positioned so that their tips overlap. Ensuring crane coverage for the entire site. I haven't seen the plans, but they usually build the structure around them. Break them down and pull then out at the end. The hole left will be filled in afterwards. Concrete etc...

Yep. I haven't personally had a contractor use one on the projects I've worked on but a couple of the guys in our office have for the $100,000,000 jobs we get occasionally.

Yeah. I worked for the GC doing the work for 5yrs. Very familiar with them. Bad thing is they have a mass of Gumps and Auburn fans working for them. Prob the same crew / team that did Alabamas expansion. That's my only disappointment. My employer prior to them did the last expansion at LSU. Think that was during Dinardos tenure. He gave a number of us old game worn helmets at the end. I got Demetrius Hookfins helmet. Has his number and name inside it. Pretty cool

The master plan for the Nicholson corridor? If so then yes and I was very impressed. Wish that could have been done before I got here.

What are your thoughts on the nicholson expansion? Any chance of a rail car because I've heard it discussed. I saw the plans that came out the other day and it looked very nice.

This is the best part of the construction process. We'll see a lot of architecture being thrown up over these next few months.

I am really excited about the Nicolson project. Will help that side of campus alot. They will eventually move over University Press/ect off sorority row and move it over to the new area on Nicolson and will make sorority row all Greek Housing. The new "complex" is going to be great during game days and for visitors. I believe the railway will happen also. Might try and squeeze in a few minors and such to push back graduation.

no shit? I was laughing because your post made it seem you thought it took months to build the foundations just for the cranes.

I was very happy with it. There is so much potential on that side of campus and right now it is being completely underutilized. I particularly liked the plans for the old Alex Box site and the pedestrian greenway running between the Natatorium and the Field House.

As for a rail line, I could definitely see it happening down the road. Apart from funding issues, I can't imagine it would actually happen until the area between LSU and downtown is "cleaned up" a bit more.

Just think, when the SEZ expansion is finally finished, we'll have what is essentially FOUR different Tiger Stadium's. North Tiger Stadium. South TS. East TS. West TS. Do a 360 walk around the stadium and you'll see four different architectural styles that have no resemblance and do not blend into each other aesthetically. About the only thing that's going to even remotely match up are the "Arches" from the North and the new South.

I assume the AD is also going to replace the old windows and refinish the exterior facade on the West and East just like on the North.

BTW, the North side looks awesome at night with all the P + G lighting, as will the new South if they do the same illumination technique there.

Of course they don't take that long to get one operational if really needed. You could probably have the piling done in a day, the formwork done in a few days and ready to pour and then at least 7 days for the breaks. So within 2 weeks you can have all 3 operational if you put enough man power behind but that's not what usually happens and isn't what happened on this project. They took at least a month and half, probably longer from start to finish.

I know what Ram was talking about, and I kinda did make it sound like it was a typical construction time.

What's been going on? Yeah, after the source for my teabagger pick was removed I tried using this old one. The timing was weird but apparently it didn't meet the size requirements.

You watching the game?
