| NASA Rover Finds Conditions Once Suited for Ancient Life on Mars (Posted on 3/12/13 at 12:36 pm)
quote:
An analysis of a rock sample collected by NASA's Curiosity rover shows ancient Mars could have supported living microbes. Scientists identified sulfur, nitrogen, hydrogen, oxygen, phosphorus and carbon -- some of the key chemical ingredients for life -- in the powder Curiosity drilled out of a sedimentary rock near an ancient stream bed in Gale Crater on the Red Planet last month. "A fundamental question for this mission is whether Mars could have supported a habitable environment," said Michael Meyer, lead scientist for NASA's Mars Exploration Program at the agency's headquarters in Washington. "From what we know now, the answer is yes."

A lot of the stuff we learn in space is helpful in its applications to our world. Surely you know that.

I dont see the benefit of being on Mars other than looking for new / more resources

Mars = Earth 1 before their version of North Korea went apeshit, fortunately scientists were able to send a single family to live on earth- they prospered and we are now their offspring?

What about the advancements in science and technology that get us there? Don't think those achievements trickle down to here?

what we learn on Mars could lead to a multitude of break thrus across science. it could lead to a different way of thinking that could eliminate certain diseases, provide anecdotes to major societal problems, etc. Something like this will provide completely unknown benefits that we may not know about for many years.

Retarded. "Conditions once suited for life" is like saying I've found evidence I may have once had 100,000,000,000 dollars because I have a back yard suitable for storage of said money.

Even if the advances in technology don't yield any immediate benefits to individuals, one of the most basic attributes of the human condition is curiosity and the need to explore. If your only concern is finding more oil and metals to make petty crap you don't need, then you're everything that is holding us back as a species.
