I would disagree. I would say it's the other way around. Equipment is the crutch for the modern player. It would be like comparing a soldier today to a soldier of Troy

Tied for majors but tiger has more wins and better winning percentage at 37 than jack did. Also has more money titles. Pretty clear cut who was better at 37 and any age prior.

I would bet that most modern players also train more, compete more, study the game more, work on individual facets of their play more, and condition their bodies better. It's easy to get into this argument in any GOAT debate. The fact remains that today's athletes are better than ever before--in every sport. Technology doesn't really detract from that. Michael Phelps could out swim Johnny Weisman in a sweatsuit.

Have to disagree.

ETA: My phone ac'd Weissmüller (umlauts and all) to Weismann. Y'all know what I meant.

How many players in the field today are putting their cigarettes on the ground between each swing? If you don't recognize the level of conditioning and athleticism in the sport today you are delusional.

I never said that...I would agree with the fact that players today are conditioned better and train better...but player in the past relied on pure skill...players today have crutches (or more crutches) to fall back on

I wouldn't call it a crutch, but there are players at every level, from pro to club level, that couldn't play without new equipment.

Ping equipment made the game accessible for everyone.

But, it goes both ways, because courses changed in concurrence with equipment advances

Actually more than you think. It's not shown on TV because it's seen as negative, but it happens WAY more than is shown.

the equipment allows inferior players to win pga events. you literally have hundreds of players that could win on the pga tour now. that is why johnny miller said in 1996 that tiger would win 50 events and 10 majors and would be equivalent to what jack did.

By "train" I actually meant practice their game more than train their bodies--though repetition and muscle memory are helpful in precision sports like golf. And that creates "pure skill".

All of that aside, Tiger Woods was a golf prodigy. It's pretty well documented. He may have more "pure" skill than anyone on record. He learned to play from his old man (an Army officer, not a great golf coach) at public courses in SoCal.

Well one can't very well be a prodigy for life can he?

Sure they can...until the next prodigy comes along...

The only thing different in this case is that there hasn't been another one. He ended it on his own.

Prodigy, when referring to a person, typically refers to a child or someone else who's "coming along". Not trying to be too pedantic here. Tiger was a child prodigy who became the GOAT before he was 30.

You do realize the equipment Jack and co used was cutting edge for their time.too, right? Your argument is bull shite.

If you handed Jack, Arnold, Ben Snead, Hogan, and all of those guys the equipment that today's elites use, they might occassionally crack the top 15.

That's humbling for older guys. Believe me. I turned 30 less than 2 months ago and my father's pushing 70. They hang on to old athletes and old actors and past times like mother's milk. Nothing to resent really. Just the way it is.

Yea...the quality of a black and white television is just as comparable to a flat screen HDTV...
