Schumer: TSA should reverse plan to allow knives on planes

LINK

quote:

Sen. Charles Schumer wants the Transportation Security Administration to reverse its newly announced plan to allow passengers to bring small knives and other items, like golf clubs and hockey sticks, onto planes.

Schumer (D-N.Y.) said Sunday the TSA's new policy puts passengers and crew members in danger. He said the items, which were banned after the Sept. 11 attacks, could be used as weapons.

"While it's true that pilots are safe, locked behind cockpit doors, these dangerous items still pose a significant hazard to the flight crew, other passengers, and even the integrity of the plane," said Schumer.

Schumer is the latest public figure to join a growing opposition to the proposed plan, which is set to be implemented April 25.

On Friday, the head of Delta Air Lines voiced his opposition to allowing small knives on planes in a letter to TSA Administrator John Pistole obtained by The Associated Press.

Aviation insurers as well as unions representing flight attendants, pilots and federal air marshals have also publically opposed the plan.

Items like box cutters and razor blades are still prohibited under the new policy. But passengers will be allowed to include in their carry-on luggage novelty-size baseball bats less than 24 inches long, toy plastic bats, billiard cues, ski poles, hockey sticks, lacrosse sticks and two golf clubs.
Knives permitted under the policy must be able to fold up and have blades that are 2.36 inches or less in length and are less than 1/2-inch wide.

What is in the hell is the TSA thinking?

Why would someone choose to stab people on a plane but not in other tight situations like offices, concerts, sporting events, etc? It's silly. The is the first common sense thing the TSA has done.

So a lot of people were being stabbed prior 9/11 on planes?

Just making a comment, nothing to do with knives.

I wouldn't mind allowing the airlines to handle their own security, again. TSA has made flying in some places a bitch.

Anything that threatens the life of passengers and flight attendants should be banned. You can put your knife in your luggage bag at the bottom of the plane. Nobody is saying you can't travel with a knife, just not in the flight cabin.

Why should flight attendants and airline passengers receive special protection above me at a restaurant?

The people that actually work on the planes are not comfortable. I think it's the least we can do to make them feel safer.

It's irrational. The risk is no greater on the plane

Did the 911 Hijackers use box cutters to overthrow planes?

I don't believe the TSA allows anybody in the cockpit besides the pilots since 911. Still, why do you need a knife on a plane?

No they used complacency. No one is taking over a plane with a box cutter or a samari sword even in today's environment.

Here is another angle, on small commuter planes the doors are not pressurized and don't plug like bigger planes. So smaller commuter planes reliy on lock pins that slide into the door frame on the aircraft to hold the door in place. These doors can be opened in mid flight.

ETA: Say you have 10 terrorist with knives on a smaller commuter plane they could easily take control of the cabin and execute this scenario.

So fricking what, when the aircraft presurizes the door presses against a seal and the tension on the pins makes it very difficult to open that door. Got a link to these crazy frickers opening doors?

There are a lot of "what ifs" but the tsa is intended to stop large scale terror attacks. A bus or tractor trailer can so as much damage as a commuter plane.

I'll see what I can dig up, but don't say it's crazy until you know the facts. You obviously don't know the facts and are shooting from the hip. Give me time and I'll provide some information.

I read a lot of information about a number of topics.

I've read that lock pin doors on small commuter planes can in fact be opened during mid flight in a NTSB report. The planes do not have plugs so they use lock pins that slide the doors in place.

ETA: NTSB has thousands of reports. I wish the report would be easier to find.

They are easier to open, plug type doors are nearly impossible. But what does a pocket knife have to do with it?
