re: Adam Carolla Podcast today: Gavin Newsom
he kind of summed up the progressive movement in one comment, also, at 1:26:48:

"i don't want to have a sociological debate. i want to deal with reality"

i do like how he brings up racism and the VRA...in California

also when corolooa brings up all the "jews and asians" at the "check cashing places," and newsom says there are lots there, i almost lost it. there are lies, and then there is that comment

but I think there was a point that was missed. That is, liberal policies actually perpetuate the broken family cycle.

ironically, newsom was talking about using government as incentives, and then ignoring how welfare-type programs incentivize certain behaviors

I know. I wish there was video so I could see he face. If the life of my kids depended on me telling that lie, they'd be dead right now, because I would have laugh, farted and snorted before I finished the sentence.

It's not just politicians. I hear these type of conversations in college classrooms. It's willful ignorance and lying in the name of being a giant pussy and not having the stones to say what everyone is thinking.

I knew of Gavin Newsom however this is the first time I've ever heard him interviewed. He does have some pretty liberal views but those views as he expressed them does not seem so divisive as when Obama says similar things. He seems like a pretty decent guy outside of politics.

re: Adam Carolla Podcast today: Gavin Newsom
Adam is not a right wing dude. He's an atheist and socially liberal but super common sense and pragmatic on the shite that drives most of us crazy.

Newsom did some nutty shite back in San Fran when he was mayor. He was noteworthy for some of it. He played the moderate card pretty well out of the gate but I gotta say the last 15 min of that was the most magnificent destruction of a liberal I've ever seen.

It was only magnificent because Newsom stepped in there and actually was challenged. Not much of that ever.

Being socially liberal (liberal in the true sense, like it's none of your damn business) is right wing imo.

And some CA municipalities with that "drop plan".

That's financial negligence. With that kind of mentality form CA politicians no wonder CA is broke.

Agreed. I think Newsom articulated his views pretty well under some pretty heavy heat by Carolla. The most glaring exception was his inability to name specific reasons for problems plaguing certain ethnic groups. Another was Newsom's rationale for supporting cycling helmets (because he didn't want to pay the hospital bill after an accident); yet, he seemed uninterested in regulation to prevent unwise childbirth but supported raising minimum wage and subsidized lunch programs.

It is amazing how two different people can listen to the same interview and come away with such totally different impressions. I thought Newsom handled everything very well and deflected Carolla's questions pretty easily. It was obvious Carolla was trying to get Newsom to say blacks are lazy or something like that, but he never backed down. He even made Carolla seem out of touch and irreverant. I know LA is a big city, but why bring on a State rep and try to grill them about local traffic laws? Plus Carolla sounded dumb mocking someone for not passing the bar, then admitted he knows he could never pass it either. I listen to Carolla quite a bit and it always makes me cring when he starts getting into political issues. He just into smart enough to handle mass social issues. It's like listening to Charles Barkley do the same thing. It's funny and some of it makes sense in some way, but there is no substance, perspective and no way to accomplish what they think..

i think he just wanted newsom to admit there are familial issues in the black community, and he wouldn't even do that

he wouldn't give ANYTHING in response though. that's horribly weak

quote:

he's a Lt. Gov and he was talking about state traffic laws

quote:

you missed the point. he said he knew he couldn't pass the bar, but was smart enough to know that...unlike the mayor of LA

what did he say that was so stupid last night about social issues?

fwiw, i didn't fully agree with him

I believe he admitted the best he could while being sensitive to the nature of the problem. If Carolla thought he was going to get a politician (any politician) to come on his show and say that all black dads are deadbeats and the kids are all dumb, then he is living in a dreamworld. Newsom said family issues are a problem, but he said it's not the biggest problem or he wouldn't rank it #1. Btw, there are other big issues, like drugs and incarcerations..

quote:

he's a Lt. Gov and he was talking about state traffic laws

I didn't get that. He did talk about the move the car out of the road policy, but it seemed like most of the issues Newsom said were local ordinance issues. That's why they kept bringing up the Mayors race. I could be wrong though.

quote:

No, I got it, but I never find it funny. The bar is a tough test and is hard to pass. People are supposed to fail, it doesn't make them dumb, it just means they aren't ready to practice law. I know people that took the ACT a half dozen times to get a better score. I didn't make fun of them for getting too low of a score. So I don't get why he is bringing it up..

quote:

It is just oversimplification like he always does. He does it in everything he talks about. I have read his books and he does it in there as well. There is some great common sense things in there, but he just points things out. Like if you can't support a kid, don't have them. Well that's great, but what do you do about those that do? That's just one example.

Btw, I am a huge Carolla fan. I read his last book, enjoyed "the Hammer" (very underrated movie), the car stuff is great and his movie reviews with Simmons are awesome. I just hate that he is becoming a mouthpiece for the right. It doesn't fit him and the ideas are too complex for his simple, down to earth point of view. I just wish he would get away from it..

Expect them to deal with consequences of their decisions. Harsh, I know.

re: Adam Carolla Podcast today: Gavin Newsom

why did you include the bolded part? why does that matter?

quote:

If Carolla thought he was going to get a politician (any politician) to come on his show and say that all black dads are deadbeats and the kids are all dumb, then he is living in a dreamworld.

well only 75% (per the show) of them are born out of wedlock. and again, you missed his point. he said that newsom wouldn't be honest and would continue to lie solely to save votes. that was the point of that discussion: newsom was lying, lying, and lying some more

quote:

Btw, there are other big issues, like drugs and incarcerations..

those are symptoms of bigger problems

but, again, carolla's point was bad choices put people into binds. drugs are bad choices

quote:

People are supposed to fail, it doesn't make them dumb, it just means they aren't ready to practice law.

the bar doesn't test your ability to practice law. i've taken one, and it had little to do with the practice of law

it was mostly an endurance test (Cali has a similarly difficult bar, like LA...both are real tough)

quote:

Like if you can't support a kid, don't have them. Well that's great, but what do you do about those that do?

let them live shitty lives and pay for their mistakes

quote:

It doesn't fit him and the ideas are too complex for his simple, down to earth point of view.

i think people overcomplicate issues because they want to be like newsom and not admit the truth. things get complicated when you keep lying about shite over and over

If you don't give them "tax dollar assistance" I'm sure they would figure out a way like generations of people before them.
