What is "for the most part"?

Why not the whole part?

You always hear those stories about money going towards ridiculous things, like shrimp on treadmills.

its only like 2% of the budget i think, and a lot of it does a whole hell of a lot of good. hard to put a ratio on good research to bad, but id say we are getting our money's worth on balance.

kill funding to the arts. that shite is worthless.

i'm sure theres a lot of waste as in most things the government spends money on. but I think it provides for the general welfare more than Obama phones

They have a major role in helping push discovery and innovation.

I'm a big fan since I'm a scientist

The US putting money into science is definitely a main reason why we are the leaders in so many fields

Do you think it isn't useful for the government to fund research? Or is it the principle of it?

"Recent research has shown that empirical evidence for globalization of corporate innovation is very limited and as a corollary the market for technologies is shrinking. As a world leader, it's important for America to provide systematic research grants for our scientists. I believe strongly there will always be a need for us to have a well-articulated innovation policy with emphasis on human resource development."

re: What should be the federal government's role in funding research?

While I believe that the free market will always be more efficient in springing up the great technological and medical breakthroughs that propel society forward, I do think government has a role to play through the political process of maintaining research that provides a constant stream of "knowledge searching" in order to benefit society as a whole, based on what the government (the people) believes is important. SOME scientific knowledge may not be profitable or economical to unveil, i.e. space research and travel. The ROI may take several generations to realize, which would not be appealing to private investors today, therefore the American people should be sold on the importance of its funding.

Also, the grant process is IMO one of the more honest processes in government funding (in most, not all cases). A scientist proposes research in a field the government (theoretically, representing the will of the people) deems important. The grant is submitted to a panel of peers in the same field who vet the entire proposed research methods, hypotheses, purpose, etc. and decide to approve or reject the funds, or suggest changes to resubmit.

Yes, I agree. Those who are saying "None" must not have a good understanding of science and research, their importance, and the role grants (i.e., government money) play in them, I expect. No disrespect. However, like anything else related to the government, there are probably many areas of waste with re: to funding research.
