Since last summer, the Texas group Defense Distributed has been working to make the idea of home 3D printing of gun components and possibly even entire firearms into a reality. They’ve succeeded, at least, for one man: New York representative Steve Israel, who sees the possibility as real enough that it needs to be explicitly banned in law. After Defense Distributed’s YouTube tests of partially 3D printed semiautomatic weapons, Israel promised last month to specifically ban 3D printed gun components in his proposed renewal of the Undetectable Firearms Act, a law intended to ban the possession of any weapon that can’t be spotted by a metal detector or X-ray machine. And when Defense Distributed demonstrated a 3D printed high-capacity magazine–the exact ammunition feeding devices that would be banned for sale under a new federal gun control bill proposed by Congresswoman Diane Feinstein–Israel responded again, adding a specific ban on those 3D-printed ammo attachments to his proposed bill.

This is the kind of thing that is impossible to police. It doesn't matter if they ban it.

Yep. Once the specs are out there on the internet there will be no going back.

The barrel shouldn't be too difficult, right?
The chamber pressure would turn a plastic barrel to shrapnel. Barrel and bolt have to be steel.

It will happen, don't have too much doubt.

This will officially make guns like pot. Completely uncontrollable.

Isn't the lower the most difficult part to actually develop? The barrel shouldn't be too difficult, right?
The lower is the only regulated part of the gun. Creating the barrel is none too complicated. I want plastic bullets, then I will shite my pants.

you will probably see alternative bullet technologies arise with the growth of electronic weapons. think a plastic cased, electromagnetic propulsion weapon that propels a small metal projectile at a high rate of speed.

Honestly, I'm thinking caseless ammo. Cheap, light, fewer expendable material. They came close in the 80s but the narrow market shut down research.

You better wipe: German .308 training ammo. Accurate and lethal out to 100 yards. $0.12/rnd. Plenty available.

I'm not familiar with any of this technology. Just to be clear - a person can download this file, then print a functional AR15 that fires real bullets? Is that right? If so, amazing.

Not to jump kos mos' post, but the lower is the regulated portion. That is what fascinates me.

Can't print the primer or powder. I use to reload plastic shotgun shells but I think they had some metal inside of the plastic for the primer and such. So, I would not look for full plastic ammo in the near future. As stated above, I would think that the barrel and chamber would have to be metal but i'm not a plastics expert.
