i grew up pretty damn poor and it wasnt that bad - at all. im sure there are plenty of folks that had it worse than me growing up and they may have a different opinion.
but as a kid that qualified for free lunch at school, i never went hungry and always had clothes. id take it a million times over rather than being "poor" in a different country where i didnt have an opportunity to make something of myself.

Many people growing up in the south in my day grew up poor. Poor people who work their way out of it have a pretty damn unique perspective.

Agreed Roger, growing up poor has distinct advantages if your family practices love, discipline and personal responsibility. I'm grateful for all my parents sacrificed for my brother and me due to our humble existence. Like my mom always said, "We are rich as a family just not in dollar bills"..something the left just simply doesn't believe is possible.

Yeah, my dad worked, mom stayed home. He worked OT so we could take things like vacations,or school clothes. Bondo on the car floor to get another year out of it, etc.

It makes you hungrier to do better. Every kid we ran with in my neighborhood went on to graduate college. Going to high school, playing ball and working so you can afford a beater car because your folks can't afford or will not buy one is a good character builder.

We know welfare is here to stay. Let's just reform it so people are motivated to do better, and not penalized when they do start moving up in the world.

That is because the left is obsessed with material things- it defines their ideology. They are always thinking about who has more than who, who is rich, who is poor, eat the rich, tax the rich, etc. They don't realize that the true meaning of life is above money and class structure/struggle.

This reply is for the poster who said no one on this board complaining knows what it's like to be poor. But I'm on my phone.

Anyway. I know a family of four who lived in rural Louisiana. Always seemed to be in debt because they wanted to provide well for their kids but didn't have much. One of the kids works blue collar now, but is responsible. Provides for his wife and son and makes an honest living.

The other kid is a taker. Two kids by two dads and lives on food stamps. Has no job and no desire to have one.

These people grew up in the same house. The difference is their attitudes.

Wow. Well stated. Goes right to the heart of this thread. Sadly, the people who need to understand this will refute it.

so you just hate abortions? im not sure why you are ranting about sex ed

I said nothing about abortions other than PP can DIAF. Didn't RANT at all about sex ed. Just pointed out that I learned what goes where and the consequences thereof.

Sex ed is a good thing for teenagers...PP is a waste of money.

I think it explains why so many, the vast majority actually, people who grow up poor and become rich are politically conservative. It's not only because they realized what hard work and perseverance can bring to anybody, it;s the realization that those ideals are above any material hope they have. Money and wealth are no doubt important in the life we are given, but its what they mean that is even more important.

Moreover, those people that work themselves out of poverty often never let poverty get to them. Poverty is a material thing. We don't have to let it touch our minds and inner workings. Poverty is powerless when it has to battle with a strong family, a positive outlook on life, and the belief that our ideals will one day bring us wealth, prosperity, and happiness.

I'm pretty left. Grew up pretty poor. Not at all obsessed with material things. Due to tough stretches in life, even since being a kid, I've learned to do without. To get by and sacrifice.

I think generalizations like this are counter productive. I don't get why everything has to be distilled in us/them or why labeling is so important. To both sides.

Because it makes advancing my agenda easier.

That's because being politically conservative is the easiest way to keep your riches, which they have valued over many other things (this is how they got out of poverty)

The difference is what they value, more specifically.

I believe it goes a lot deeper than that.

Of course. Everything you do revolves around the things you value. If you don't value two parent households and education, you end up poor and dependent.

Generally people who make it out of poverty are more frugal than those who are born into wealth.

I imagine so. I think in a sense it represents the sacrifices you and others around you have made.
