re: Federal employees whining--

People also ignore the fact that a huge chuck on the federal employees live in an area with one of the highest cost of living. You go to where the jobs are and just happens its an arm and a leg to live in the dc area, and its still going up.

I can't sympathize with anyone that has recieved a posh defined benefits package, competitive wages, and has enjoyed insulation from the troubles the private sector endures.

I can only speak locally pvt vs public as I don't know much about Federal employees. I do know the fire dept I work for, which is civil service has dealt with layoffs and has fired many, many people since I've been there. There is an ambulance service that is private a parish over that has some of the worst looking employees you will ever see, seldom has a paramedic, and people have been caught drinking on the job and not even suspended. The problem is, this is very common among pvt ems and fire depts.

The fire dept I work at runs the ambulance service also which brings in a ton of money. They tried to jump the gun and we even had a date set about 4 years ago that we were gonna move our ambulances out and this pvt service was gonna come in. Private ems and fire services actually make alot more pay than public services do. Do some research on pvt ems and fire services skipping town and going bankrupt or defaulting on a contract. Happens all the time. Literally leaving towns and cities unprotected when they realized the money wasn't there. Again, do you wanna bunch of 5'2 280 lb women coming to pick your loved one up? I assure, 90% of the time that's the crap you're gonna see with pvt ems or fire.

Oh, our city after doing a lot of research b/c they were dead strong on getting a pvt ambulance service realized it would be way worse for the city in the long run.

You have no idea what we have had to endure but you can continue to live on your high horse and think a pay freeze has been the worst of our worries the past few years. You don't know shit, just like your little friend Crow Pie.

Yeah...you go on thinking it's all candy and roses. If the government sector was so awesome, you'd think all 300 million Americans would be getting in on the action.

He has spoken!

I love how you a-holes know so much about what civil service workers have and don't have. I'm the son of a civil service worker and my knowledge of what he does and what he earns cannot compare to that of the TD Political Talk board.

Unless you have had a government job, it is hard to imagine the never ending bull shite that one has to endure on a daily basis.

Now it has become popular to bash government workers which has made it just that much more difficult to deal with. The general public will never understand this because they have never experienced it.

It's a crisis when federal employees lose their jobs. When people in the private sector are losing jobs Washington doesn't care.

Oh those poor government workers. Boo Hoo

Go out there and get another job like everyone else.

How many private jobs have been lost of the last 5 years? How many public? The answer to that will probably tell you who has suffered the most. You will probably not get you much sympathy from them either.

He sounds like a fine man. And thanks for asking. The answer lies in the word RISK. I bet you can figure the rest out.

Those of us who work in law enforcement recognize that you private sector folks have a rather MILD idea of what actual risk is.

Crow Pie, you just sound bitter, making an assumption of an entire group of people because of your prejudiced notion?

There is a distinct difference between the clerk, admin person that you probably deal with in your limited interactions and an engineer or economist. Some of the smartest people in my grad classes are at DoE and DoD.

If you have such a problem with the fact that there is security in being a skilled federal employee, like myself then maybe you should have studied a profession that offers some job protection like, medicine, engineering or accounting instead of whatever job you do now.

There was a time in this country where public employees made less money than the private sector, but they had pensions and it sort of made up for the loss in salary, as private employees generally did not have defined pensions upon retirement.

Fast forward to today, and government employees in most every sector make more money than a private employee doing basically the same job. They still have their defined benefit plans, and many are able to retire and turn around and contract with the government and make even more.

No sympathy to those with pay freezes. Let them go find a job in the private sector and see how folks like us are living. Not nearly as good.

That hasn't been my experience. Our IT guys get paid less. Most of our IT employees couldn't get a job in the private sector. The modest salary cannot compete with what the private sector is offering, so we get the dregs. Only about 1 per year among an IT staff of 50 (reduced to about 37 over the past 3 years of actual budget cuts) get hired away from gov't. We're stuck with the rest for the remainder of their careers.

All of that makes perfect sense to me; unfortunately, if the posters on here are reflective of the populace at large, they are clueless.

Hugs out there to Officer Fife and the boys. May you withstand the increasingly violent tendencies of our criminal class, until you can partake in a comfortable taxpayer-funded full early retirement somewhere in Florida. Mad Respect. Until then, keep locking up the Bad Guys and keep those parking tickets flowing!

Of course, the more mild form of risk that I referred to, was the risk of CAPITAL, in which millions of small business owners like myself have taken through the years to create the tax base in which public sector employees like you require to have jobs in the first place. When we succeed, we provide the employment and tax base that every community requires to fund their local and State governments. We take financial risks that often result in total economic destruction for ourselves and our families, sometimes based on events beyond our control. When we fail, they don't requisition our paper clips,or make a 3% cut, they actually seize our bank accounts and our homes. And at that point we start anew, with no expectation that any of our fellow citizens owe us a damn thing, let alone a living.

This is not something I would expect a Federal employee to understand, nor would I even really wish you to understand. America needs the less ambitious, those who trade industry achievement for job security, to function. We can't all be show horses, we need plow horses too. The Yin and The Yang, if you will. Maybe the best amongst us, exhibit a bit of both. No doubt.

You need us to survive. And we need you as well, but to be of the PROPER SIZE and SCOPE so as not to CHOKE US and hence YOU OUT OF EXISTENCE.
