With the surge of basketball fever, on this date in 1980 LSU won the SEC-T

for so far the only time -- pre 1954, or since the renewal in 1979.

Tremendous game at the Civic Center in Birmingham with LSU winning 80-78. A freak snow storm hit Birmingham that morning effectively shutting down the town and after about 14,000 had seen Ole Miss vs Kentucky and Alabama vs LSU the night before, only about 8,000 made it to the game -- mostly UK and LSU fans staying at the Hyatt across the street.

This was the height of this series where "LSU vs Kentucky" was mentioned as one of the best rivalries in the country at the time. LSU had downed UK at Rupp earlier that year 65-60 and six days earlier Kyle Macy drilled a shot at the buzzer to give Kentucky a 76-74 win and SEC regular season title.

LSU led 34-31 at haltime and oddly enough, even though LSU won by only two, Kentucky could never tie it and LSU was in "control" of a two point win about as much as you could be. Not only was this a big win in securing the tournament title and easing the pain of the prior week's loss, but it helped erase the humiliating loss to Kentucky on the same court in 1979 in the tourney semifinal 80-67 which wasn't nearly that close. DeWayne Scales who allegedly listen to outside sources instead of the LSU staff in '79, scored 26 points in the win.

In the second year of seeding in the NCAA tournament, both LSU and Kentucky received One Seeds making the SEC the first team to have two One seeds.

Note the "Louisiana State" on the jerseys used in 1979-80 and 1980-1981.

Those were some good teams. We kind of got hosed in 1980, they did the regions literally and we got stuck playing Louisville in the final 8. We lost to the eventual champ 3 years in a row. MSU 79, LU 80, IU 81.

Oddly we lost to Lousiville in 80 in the Elite Eight, and 86 in the Final Four and we lost to Indiana in the Final Four in 81 and the Elite 8 in 87.

That would be a sick throw back jersey. Would love to buy one.

That was the year I started watching LSU basketball. I'd love it if someone posted videos of the games from that year. I think I remember LSU playing DePaul on a Sunday that year. Anyway they were a very exciting and deep team. DeWayne Scales' last year (exciting but a head case), Rudy Macklin, Ethan Martin, Howard Carter (his Freshman year), Greg Cook. Jordy Hultberg was even on that team and saw spot duty.

I believe the home jeserys had Louisiana State in Script with stars all around the trim. I thought it was the college version of the Harlam Globetrotters. Scales (The Astronaut) sometimes played like a globetrotter. Most of the young people on this board don't know what kind of badass he was.

It is pretty astonishing and even a statistical anomaly for this basketball program to not have won an SEC Tournament in 32 seasons. Even worse, is the SEC top to bottom has not been one of the more prestigious basketball conferences during the duration of that span.

We actually get around to putting up a conference contender 2-3 times a decade, which is a lot more than some of the other in-conference schools.

Agreed. Part of the problem was that Brown hated the tournament unless LSU needed to win some games to get in the NCAA's. We have played in the title game a few times.

Personally, I thought we were going to win the tournament the year Carlos Grooves mugged Shaq. Shaq got suspended for the title game against Kentucky.
