Why is the State department commenting on the environmental soundness?

Not sure the report was released today. Typical "Friday dump" that won't get much attention.

The environmental impacts have been previously approved by the govt. It's just a pipeline. We have hundreds of thousands of miles throughout the US. It was insanely stupid/polical to hold this up.

Well they do have authority over the international crossing so I'm sure "environmental soundness" is a component of the criteria to issue a permit.

Exactly. But, since he is now having to answer questions about the transparency in the white house, he needs a quick win. That and the fact that gas is over $4/gallon is also a big factor. Obama, leading from behind.

No. Obama held off on permitting the pipeline before the election to keep the extreme left wing environmentalist happy. He doesn't need them now. So it's on to helping the unions by approving the pipeline now that the election is over.

Seriously. I'm glad to see that logic and common sense eventually prevailed though this entire permitting fiasco.

Do we even know if it's going to be union labor doing the work?

No. However, I am very confident that union contractors will get the opportunity to bid on the project (or parts of the project) and believe it or not union pipeline contractors are very competitive on medium to large jobs. They don't compete that well on small jobs. Mom and pop contractors usually win those jobs.

ooh, some good stuff here
quote:
Preventing this pipeline was considered by many a must win as NASA climate scientist James Hansen said the Canadian tar sand exploitation was game over for the planet. Seems like Game Over then. Obama will be reviled by coming generations, as will we all who are living through these times. However, most of our names will never be known. His, and some others, will be known. And despised, hated, and oft cited as examples of terrible leadership. Should the human race continue with knowledge of this part of its civilizations. Hilary left to avoid blame. Game over for the planet. Obama is a spinless weaking, who retreats when forcibly confronted unless he can use drones.
