Justin is a bit lengthier, strong as frick and has been very consistent throughout his career, it just went mostly unnoticed on cincy

he's played in 50 more games than Will Smith, yet only has 7.5 more sacks.

if he's going unnoticed, not sure what the deal is with Will Smith.

the scheme change obviously did Justin SMith good.

What am I answering?

My biggest problem with will is his inconsistency throughout his career.

re: Cap update: ~$2m over, Will Smith update: still fat

so because Will Smith got 13 sacks one year and only 7 or 8 the next, that makes him inconsistent compared to someone who only gets 6 or 7 sacks a season?

Never has he got 7 or 8 sacks since one 13 sack season, u defending his consistency now?

And you are comparing his 4-3 years to Justin's 3-4 years now

his 5 and 6 sacks seasons are not consistent with the 13, 10 sack seasons he had.

but they are consistent to what Justin smith has done as far as rushing the passer

A. We comparing sack production of Justin playing in a 3-4 not being asked to rush passer past 5 yrs

B. You definitely don't want to have an honest discussion on rush defense of the two players comparatively speaking

my point is Will Smith may benefit from the scheme change too.

not saying he is as good as Justin. I am saying Justin was only slightly above average in a 4-3. SAme as will smith

My biggest problem is that many people apparently think he just isn't big enough. I know you aren't saying that. That is complete crap in my opinion. He is probably the same size as the average 3-4 DE.

totally agree. But he has gotten worse rushing the passer. He got stonewalled all the time by tackles last year. Against the Panthers, he was awful. I'm talking about that QB load option they ran too. He was flat out worthless defending that but hey, so was everyone else on the D.

I thought he played pretty well against Atlanta and Tampa Bay, at least against the run anyway.

In the 3-4 though you won't see him have to rush the passer as much though and I think that is what people are missing the boat on here.

But.. I'm hoping someone can beat him out for that job. If he even comes back of course....

Cutting Smith and Vilma would actually be more expensive than re-working deals

I repeated this point over and over and over to monroesaintsfan and the guy never understood lol. They are only going to release these guys if it gets to a point where releasing them makes more sense for the cap than keeping them. And all we know so far is that they have been trying to keep them, so there must be a reason for that.

This is the part people over overlooking.

it'll cause some dead money and if we can sign them to vet min or whatever at the borderline of what it would cost to cut them so we don't lose much money sure why not.

The issue I will have is if they end up playing, playing poorly, and taking away snaps from younger players that MAY be able to play better.

What are you talking about? Look at your list again. He was getting 5, 6, 7, 2 sacks with the Bengals. What Lester is saying is you guys said Justin Smith has always been consistent, but Will Smith has pretty much put up the same numbers, even when Justin was with Bengals, and Will has even had 2 bigger sack seasons than Justin ever had. Your own argument and putting up Justin Smith's sack totals actually works against your argument.

quote:

u defending his consistency now?

It's not about defending just Will Smith's consistency. It's about defending his consistency against that of Justin Smith's. It seems your only argument is to keep changing the context of what Lester is saying. An example of that is the first quote in this post.

I don't want this either. I think Smith would be a good backup, but I'm not even sure Vilma is good enough to be that.

I want to see if akiem hicks can produce if he gets more reps, I personally think he can be a great 3-4DE. I don't want will smith taking up too many reps because of seniority

As for vilma, he was traded because he was not going to be a great 3-4 LB and since jets went that way, they said bye. I still think the only issue we have right now is who will be our two OLB, I think with hawthorne and lofton sharing ILB duties. Since they're both natural at MLB, it gives them both the chance to make some big plays for us.

I have this theory that sean payton knew he wanted 3-4 this season so he told them before he got susppended he wanted akiem hicks and corey white for this reason.

I agree about Hicks. Like you said, I think he is a huge reason they are changing to the 3-4. That's also my fear of having Smith back on the team. He may end up starting just cause he is a vet. But I think Payton had a plan after watching the season from afar, and part of that plan was Hicks at 3-4 DE, and Junior and Wilson at 3-4 OLB.

From me the other night which is what you're referring to above:
quote:

He's due roughly 5.5 million in guaranteed money this year and roughly 3.5 million next. If he were to sign for the minimum (and forget that, he can get more than the minimum) and you pro-rated his existing bonus (and I don't think it can be pro-rated unless he's cut, could be wrong) it would still come up to roughly 5.5 million. He can be cut now with the bonus to be pro-rated over two years for a 4.5 million hit this year and next.

From a Mike Triplett article in the Picayune on Feb. 26: LINK
quote:

If the Saints release Smith, his cap number will drop from $14.5 million to $4.4 million, with another $2.4 million still on the books next year.

Triplett's numbers actually look better than what I came up with. I could be wrong but I'm believing he probably studies this stuff as much or more than anybody on this message board.

There is a certain amount of guaranteed money that is due Smith no matter what happens....unless you maybe think he's gonna give some of it back. There is also a certain amount of dead money to be factored in whether he goes or stays. Now maybe you're thinking a slow, fat 32 year old DE needs to be restructured and years added to his contract to spread the money out....if so, say it.

Look Pal, posting and reposting the same thing over and over doesn't mean anything.
Try forming an argument if you actually have one or just move on.

LINK

WWL guy (Bradley Handwerger?) says we have $2.5m to go in an awkwardly worded sentence:

quote:

factoring in a $2.7 million cap adjustment, the Saints sit at $125.5 million in dedicated cap dollars. The cap ceiling will reportedly be $123 million and that puts New Orleans about $4.4 million over while only $2.5 million over.

That $4.4m doesn't make sense, but whatever.
