Absolutely. He needs to prove he's more than what he was in a 43...a situational pass rusher.

Most of the best 3-4 OLB's were small, situational pass rushing DE's just like Junior coming out of college. That's why they get moved to that position lol.

The guy ain't coming out of college. Wonder why the Jets were the only 34 team to even give him a sniff in '10 after he went undrafted? LINK

Of course, it remains to be seen whether the two can make the transition from situational rushers to full-time players at OLB, particularly in the case of Galette, who’s been used more traditionally as a defensive end than Wilson

I just think this is a weird scenario for both the player and the team. Even though the saints have a very good idea about what galette can/will do, unfortunately it is only a small sample size. Sucks for galette because he's probably worth more, but the saints just can't afford to overpay on "probably". With the transition to 3-4, limited playing time, and his injury history, the saints just can't sign him to a larger long term contract. He'd be better off waiting till next year or signing a team friendly short term contract and renegotiate after this year. Put that language in there.
I just don't think anyone would be throwing money his way when he has only been a situational/3rd down pass rush guy and possibly good outside 3-4 lb but has yet to prove that he can even play the position. Yes I understand that he is our best "pure pass rusher" but that doesn't necessarily mean he can be successful playing a position that he has never even been asked to play. I just don't like when a player complains about his pay when he hasn't fully proven himself

you do realize that James Harrison was an undrafted free agent for Pitt, right? Does this mean he is no good in the NFL? And yes he isn't coming out of college, but he has developed nicely over the last 3 seasons. He was the best pass rusher we had last year, and he fits better as a 3-4 OLB.

Chad said it right. He needs a short term contract geared towards proving himself. It would be nice to sign him long term, but he probaly won't take a long term deal unless it had more money.

Did you hear that Brees is willing to renegotiate?

So what? The team doesn't just have 3 years of tape on Galette, they've got three years of seeing him up close and personal. And if they're not willing to shell out what he considers enough money there might be a reason. That's the point trying to be made.

and he fits better as a 3-4 OLB.

Afraid that's yet to be proven.

So what?

so your previous post stated this
quote:

Wonder why the Jets were the only 34 team to even give him a sniff in '10 after he went undrafted?
implying that he is not good because he was an undrafted free agent. This is and ignorant stance to make, because undrafted free agents pan out quite often. Sited Harrison as a prime example.

Do you know how he did his first three years? 4 total sacks with 0 in his third year. His 4th season was his breakout with 8.5 and then he dominated his 5th season with 16.

The point is you can't make assumptions based on someone being just an undrafted free agent nor off of only 3 seasons' worth of experience.

Now to take the three seasons of Gallette, the evidence is there that he is on the cusp of becoming a very good to great pass rusher. He has more sacks (9.5) in first three seasons than Harrison did. He has progressed and was our best pass rusher last season.

quote:

and he fits better as a 3-4 OLB.

Afraid that's yet to be proven.

That's silly talk. He hasn't played in the 3-4 yet, but that doesn't mean his skill set doesn't project to the 3-4. By your logic, no DE from college should ever project to be a 3-4 OLB due to not being proven. There's a reason the Deon Jordans are being drafted as 3-4 OLB, because they fit that postion better. Gallete is that guy: too small for 4-3 DE, but speed/quickness as a pass rusher to play the 3-4 OLB.

He appears to me to have the speed and quickness, but that was the main knock on him coming out, he wasn't big enough to play 4-3 DE nor fast enough to play the rush OLB. I want to see him prove that statement wrong, but won't know unless he is willing to take a cap friendly deal.

You need to learn how to comprehend better. The implication, as is obviously stated, was that only one 34 team gave him any interest....get it?

This other crap you're rambling on about with undrafted players is just that...crap you've imagined.

And just because you've decided he's a future All-Pro 34 olb doesn't change the fact that he might just be a situational pass rusher in it, just like he was in the 43. If he even stays on the team that is.

That's meaningless.

It would be stupid for the Saints to overpay for Galette at this point. It would be way past stupid for them to overpay because James Harrison once blossomed in his 4th year.

The guy you are arguing with is correct. The Saints need to make a reasonable offer based on what they have seen out of him and based on how they project him moving forward.

I think what most people are wrong about is the notion that you pay a player for what theyve done as opposed to what they will do. This is false. One may be an indicator of the other, MAY be, but if the Saints think Juneyah is going to be a great player they should be him a fair value.

re: Junior Galette "low-balled" by Saints?

nor fast enough to play the rush OLB

you sure about this?

LINK

quote:

STRENGTHS
Galette possesses the explosive burst off the edge you look for in a 3-4 outside linebacker or situational rush end in a 4-3. He exhibits impressive instincts and was highly-productive during his time in college. Is a high-motor, high-effort guy who plays through the whistle. He has the athleticism to make plays in the backfield.

quote:

WEAKNESSES
He is a true 'tweener prospect due to lack of adequate size to be a defensive end or speed at the outside linebacker spot. May not have the strength to effectively defend the run when teams run at him or hold up at the point of attack. Will struggle in man coverage. Has an injury history and character concerns that will cause him to drop

He is ideal for the 3-4 OLB, but his size limits him from playing 4-3 DE and his overall speed and coverage ability limits him as a 4-3 OLB. I'm not sure where you saw he was not fast enough to play as a rush OLB in a 3-4

There is no doubt that Junior is a good 3rd down OLB.
Can he be a every down OLB?
I just havn't seen enough of him on the field to say. Hope we find out in camp.

They're referencing this to him as a 34 olb, not a 43.

who said anything about overpaying him? there is now a 4 going on 5 page thread because he said he was lowballed. 1. there's no clear indication that he was even referring to contract negotiations with the Saints (and he stated later that it wasn't the case), 2. even if it was, that does not mean he is asking for more than his market value, 3. this is all part of a negotiating process, and 4. now fans here are acting as if the guy is no good based off of one tweet saying he was lowballed.

No where did anyone say he should be overpayed. I'm just calling out those saying he is no good or hasn't proven anything yet.

Show me who was a better pass rusher last season on this team.
