re: Alex Smith trade completed - traded to Chiefs

There are certainly a few guys who can excel in bad situations (and I would agree with Luck as one of those guys) but the rebuttal to that idea is simple. Why do some franchises have a terrible time developing quarterbacks and others do this quite well? The answer is that environment (esp coaching and the professionalism of a franchise as a whole) matters immensely.

Regarding Rodgers in particular I think the humbling he received in being passed over in the draft combined with the fan angst over losing Favre has ended up being a positive for him. I think that speaks well of not just how he handled the challenge but also the support structure the Packers put around him.

He went to 2 AFC Championships because he had a solid OLine, Defense and Running game which Smith Never had ever in SF. KC has that.

Rodgers spent 2 yrs behind favre and that helped tremendously you cant deny that.

He also attended McCarthy's QB Camp for 6hrs a day which helped him become a great QB.

Smith never had any of that till Harbaugh and he turned into a solid QB under solid coaching

Reid is good enough and KC cant ask for much more than that right now

Stupid move for KC UNLESS something is wrong with Cassel. Their numbers are almost identical and it's not worth having two #1's. Cassel had a good '08 and '10 season where he actually produced numbers. If he can replicate that moving forward he's your man. If not...Alex Smith isn't the answer.

Every situation and environment are different. There is no discussion to be had if you really believe all variables are held constant across the NFL for QB development.

You're also forgetting that he's due $8.5 million and will be a FA in 2014

Actually heard the Chiefs considering giving up the 1st round pick to get more picks in the 2nd-3rd round.

Biggest derp in a while

Solid strategy. So KC blows a 2nd and 3rd rounder (possibly another 2nd) on a solid, but not spectacular QB

then to compensate, they may want to trade out to get back the picks from when SF trade raped them?

that statement screams average. And average QB is probably good enough for the AFC West. I've already stated several times he only needs to be average because he is a game manager. Takes care of the ball and makes plays when he needs to.

That being said, there are a lot of butthurt people coming to Smith's aide, saying he's actually a very good quarterback who has been locked in a cellar-dwellar of a franchise, which is

They really don't need the 1st round pick. They needed a QB. The rest of the team is good. I wouldn't waste a 1st round pick on the QB's in this years draft.

Well the problem is there isn't that "guy" at the top of the draft that teams would want to trade to No. 1 for.

If they could possibly trade down to say get a guy like Fisher or Lane Johnson, that would be wise

Well I know they can't really trust Baldwin to be a viable #2 given what he has shown so far. They need a goal-line back to complement Charles. They need another guard to take over for Lilja's spot at guard. They could always use depth along the offensive line.

Then they need to replace Dorsey (who is a free agent) and possibly Jackson (who has a high salary) at DE. Then they need to get another ILB starter too.

So the only real secure position for the chiefs is OLB (with Hali and Houston) and maybe DT (if Poe actually looks good)

Before today I actually heard they were thinking about taking the guy from Texas A&M Luke Jockel. Now it looks like they might try to get some 2nd-3rd round picks back.

Hillis is still there correct? And don't they have Rueban Draughns as well?

re: Alex Smith trade completed - traded to Chiefs
Well Branden Albert is also a free agent and will likely look for more than the 7.75 million.year that Beatty got from the Giants today. That means the Chiefs will have to hope that either Jeff allen or Donald Stephenson play much better than their rookie years when they were ranked near the bottom by ProFootball Focus.

Hillis is a free agent and Draughn wasn't that impressive. Given that Charles might get a ton of touches in Reid's west coast offense and hasn't been the most durable player, the Chiefs really need to have an effective backup.

re: Alex Smith trade completed - traded to Chiefs
why the wild assumption from some that the Niners are prepping for Revis. Even IF he comes off of surgery as good as pre-knee catastrophe Revis ,dude wants QB money and is a contract nightmare. I dont trust him and he is not a Harbaugh-esque character. He held out his rookie year, no biggie, and this is his 2nd mid contract "re-up". Frick him. Grab a stud in the draft or a sleeper and move on.

Well Vernon Davis, Crabtree, and Moss have behaved under Harbaugh... maybe he has the mystique that Beliacheck has where players just do what he wants

rogers was tutored under a great offensive mind, in a great offensive system. the 49ers have been an absolute train wreck on offense during the nola/singletery era. what leads you to believe rogers would have done anything?

no OL, little receiving talent, and shitty, conservative systems don't produce good QBs
