What? He has failed to lay down several bunts this season. That has been one of the knocks on the kid in the early part of the season.

Sac bunts are different than bunting for a hit...that's what he was talking about

I realize that. He has failed to lay down sac bunts this season.

If you need an example - he failed against BYU on Friday night to get one down.

i assume you mean saturday. i had to leave after it was 6-1. so if it happened after that ok. if you are talking about his first bunt of the game that was not a sac bunt.

It was thursday, but yeah I remember that. He bunted right back to the pitcher. They need to let him swing the bat. He's fast enough to where it will be very difficult to double him up.

Yes was referring to Saturday in the loss against BYU in the top of the first. Hanagriff sure made it sound like it was a failed sacrifice attempt.

im sure getting sciambra to second was also part of it but he did not square around and sacrifice. he ran through the box and tried to drag bunt for a hit.

i had forgotten about that but he did get that bunt down. just too close to the pitcher and PM blamed it half on Ibarra getting a terrible jump. and he still was probably safe.

Ok well then that example was my mistake. That one was botched on the radio.

However, stats say that he only has 2 sac bunts on the season. Has he really only laid down 2 sac bunts all season? Because he pretty much squares around every single time Sciambra is on first. If he tries to lay a sac bunt down and fouls it off and swings away the next pitch, he has still failed to lay down a successful sacrifice bunt. Failure doesn't mean it has to result in an out.

i dont recall very many actual sacrifice bunts by laird. they've almost all been exclusively for a hit. the safety squeeze and bunt #2 saturday against byu are what i recall. i havent seen every single inning though.

Regardless, I disagree with playing small ball so early in the game...especially with laird swinging a hot bat. I'm not a coach so its just another average joe opinion

LSU 6th - Sciambra walked (3-1). Laird reached on a fielder's choice, bunt (0-1); Sciambra out at second c to ss.

This was another one against Maryland where he appears to have been unsuccessful with the sacrifice.

Not trying to argue with you here, I am just saying so far this year I do feel like he has struggled to get the bunt down. I feel like he isn't completely comfortable handling the bat in the 2 hole YET. He has great tools and is going to be very valuable. I think he will develop into a fine 2 hole hitter by the end of the season. My only knock on the kid so far is that he just doesnt appear 100% comfortable yet, which is expected.

Ditto, especially so often. Seems like every single time. I would really like it if they would let some of these guys swing away because scouting report is going to lead opposing coaches to shift around infielders a little bit which will open up some holes for balls to get through. Thats when it becomes a great time to start hitting and running, which with Sciambra is a very good option.

Agreed, I'd like to see him swing away until he has perfected bunting. He can't get better at it by doing it in games, only frustrates him more because a lot of bunting is mental.
