re: LSU Basketball All Star Team

A young Kareem and Walton would eat Shaq alive.
Yes, that's likely true. And while they were double teaming Shaq, Pete and CJ would rain in about 130 points, while Rudy and Petit would clean up for another 40 or so (depending on who they left unguarded for the double team).

Of course, that would never happen since no one with the privilege of coaching an all-time UCLA team would be stupid enough to double team Shaq. They would put one of Walton or Kareem on him and keep him to a manageable 20-25 points and likely edge him out in rebounding, and let the other one dominate Petit underneath while their perimeter players tried to slow down Pete and CJ with a little help from whoever was on Rudy.

Another note for this fantasy matchup, if coaching got involved we'd be fricked. I'd guess there are literally dozens of schools who could put an all-timer coach on their bench that would coach circles around anyone we've ever had at LSU. We've had some good ones, but no one who has been anywhere close to an greatest of all time conversation. I can think of at least 4 coaches in the game right now (as far as I know) that could probably do it (Coach K, Roy Williams, Bobby Knight if he's still coaching, Pitino . . . could probably name more if I really followed college Basketball any more).

While debating coaches is really a different topic altogether, I have to respond that Dale Brown was no slouch in his prime.

I have to agree with that. Wooden vs the "Freak Defense".

College Shaq actually shot FTs well at times. I remember him hovering around 60% and thinking he was gonna develop it. In the pros, he took a step back.
He averaged 62% one year for the Lakers, but I am pretty sure that was the year the refs let him take an extra step towards the basket. Never saw anything like it in my life. The NBA bent over backwards for Shaq.

Would John "Hot Plate" Williams make the list?

Must be on this list. Also, Derrick Taylor was a sick point guard. DeWayne Scales, Tree Green, Nikita Wilson are also possible additions to the bench.

re: LSU Basketball All Star Team

Just how many minutes are you expecting the backups to play? The game only has 200 minutes to spread among all players, and I would expect the starters would play at least 25 minutes each. Do you expect to substitute for all 5 starters at once, or would the substitutes rotate to keep several starters on the floor at all times? What makes you think the players LSU has available off the bench would not be excellent for specific roles? There are great shooters available, perimeter defenders, post defenders and players to go full court pressure if needed.

The one weakness LSU might have is free throw shooting from Shaq. Schools like UCLA and Georgetown could go 4 deep at center and just foul Shaq all game long.

LSU's next 5 would be littered with SEC POY winners, i.e. the best player in the SEC for a year
Actually, only 4 of our next 5 could be SEC POY (we've only had 8 all time, and Petit wasn't one of them). And none of our last 3 could be. Kentucky, meanwhile, would have their choice of a dozen SEC POY winners (if they wanted), meaning they'd only have one guy on the whole roster who wasn't a POY. Not to mention, they have 15 guys all time who were 1st All Americans (just counting AP/UPI). We've only got 8 who made 1st team on any All American list, and that's going all the way back to Sparky Wade. The quality depth just doesn't match up. Past the first 3-5, we just don't have the history to hang with the major historical programs in basketball.

In a one game format though you're only playing 7, maybe 8 guys. And your starters are gonna play at least 34 minutes probably. LSU has 3 guys in the best 50 nba players of all-time, does Kentucky even have 1? And Jackson and Macklin were just as good in college as anyone kentucky ever had. Even if our bench was just our 2000 guys i.e. Bass, Big Baby, Thomas, Thornton, and Temple for defense they could hold their own for 2-3 minutes a half

In Shaq, Pettit and Pistol you have three members of the 50 greatest of all-time.

Yea, I'd agree this is a team who could play with any other school's all time team.

Without debating the merits of Williams, Reynolds, Blanton, et al....

I would gladly replace Stromile or Tyrus Thomas with Tasmin Mitchell. Not that Mitchell is "better" than either one, but Stro and Tyrus are essentially the same player. Tasmin could provide a mid-range jumper, and actual post moves, without sacrifing that much in the way of rebounding.

Does this all time team have to play in an all time SEC tournament?

If so, make a spot for Antonio Hudson.

I don't think TM was quite as dynamic as either TT or SS. They were both better at creating something out of nothing where TM excelled off of screens etc...
