But see, they were, just not on top 40 radio. They got plenty of airplay on AOR stations.

Well that's what I mean by popularity. Top 40 and MTV. When I read that article I thought that was what the author was getting at.
The time frame you are talking about, hair metal was dominant. In the early 80's there was plenty of rock on the charts. Maybe no better than hair metal in some respects, but stuff like Styx, REO, Journey, Foreigner (Today's Classic Rock radio festival acts). As well Tom Petty, Billy Squire, I'm counting all of that as rock. And older bands like Led Zepplin, plus bands I mentioned, VH, AC/DC and Rush that didn't have hit singles, but still got lots of AOR airplay, had monster albums and tours. Sure by the late 80;s hair metal had taken over top 40, but I'd argue once a genre like that hits top 40, it's already dead.

And stop dissing Def Leppard. Don't even try and front like you weren't rocking out to Pyromania and Hysteria with your mullett.
I loved Hi and Dry and Pyromania. DL got a lot of play on MTV. But with Hysteria, they lost me like Rick Allen's left arm.

I do think a major problem with alt-rock is that it steadfastly refuses to rock. The reason Grizzly Bear sucks is that the music just sort of sits there. It is meant to be appreciated, but it doesn't really connect on a visceral level. The Black Keys have always rocked. And I've loved 'em for it.
Amen. Some people are so damn obsessed over bickering over semantics of sub genres of modern rock they fail to realize that most somewhat readily available rock music(speaking in generalities) just doesn't really rock anymore. I've tried to listen to bands like the japandroids and titus andronicus that are often championed as some of the better rock bands going today and can't get into it for anything. I'm sure tthat'll draw some snarky comment from somebody but the majority of it just sounds like a damn redundant wall of noise to me....and not a good wall of noise. I work 50-60 hours a week and have a a new son. I don't really have time to dig for good new rock music. So I continue to listen to songs from the past. It would be sweet to have some decent rock radio.

Mumford & Sons is the first mainstream rock group I have liked for a long while. They have a different sound to them and it is very appealing to me for some reason.

They've come into the mainstream. Babel hit #1 on the Billboard charts and they just won the Grammy for Album of the Year. How is that not categorized as mainstream? They aren't really a niche band anymore. They have quite the following.

Sticking feathers up your butt doesn't make you a chicken either. If Mumford and sons are "rock" then fun. is "rock" Eta: the point is neither are "rock" It's ridiculous

Because I can always count on you posting something in music threads that I completely disagree with. We are total opposites apparently.
