LSU 72, Tennessee 82 - Recap

LSU (15-9,6-7) played one of their better games, but still fell short to Tennessee (15-10,7-6) Tuesday night. LSU was led by Johnny O'Bryant who scored 24 points on 9 of 16 shooting and 6 of 8 from the free throw line. He also had 8 rebounds and 2 steals. Tennessee had Jordan McRae make all 6 of his three pointers en route to a career high 34 points. He added 6 rebounds and 3 steals. Trae Golden also scored 20 points and 8 assists as the duo scored 54 of Tennessee's 82 on the night.

If you look at LSU's team line, it would be good enough to win on most nights. The team shot 51.3% (20-39) from two point range, 33.3% (6-18) from three point range and almost 78% (14-18) from the free throw line. They out-rebounded Tennessee 29 to 27, including 15 offensive rebounds. They only had 13 turnovers and stole the ball 7 times. Overall, LSU played one of their better games. They did leave shooters open occasionally, but Tennessee is 284th in the NCAA in three point shooting. Unfortunately for LSU, Tennessee made 10 of 15 from deep more than doubling their average.

Anthony Hickey hit three big deep balls and ended the night with 14 points. Andre Stringer had 8 points on seven shots and Andrew Del Piero had 5 points on two shots, including a monster "And 1" dunk that will definitely go on the Tuba Highlight reel. Malik Morgan scored 12 points on 7 shots and made both of his free throws.

Kentucky ran into a sleeping giant Saturday night. That giant has awoken. The last two games, Tennessee has played like one of, if not the top team in the SEC. When Tennessee has McRae and Golden hitting shots they will be tough to defend. LSU did a pretty good job containing Jarnell Stokes who had 13 points and 11 rebounds. He tied Johnny O'Bryant for the SEC lead in Double Doubles at 11 on the season.

Johnny O'Bryant has been on a tear the past four games. He is playing like everyone thought he would and is really making a move for possible All-SEC Honors. I'll tell you, no coach wants to face him right now. We also saw productive games from Malik Morgan and Andrew Del Piero who both played well. Malik had a career high 12 points, 2 rebounds and an assist before fouling out late in the second half. The biggest question may be where Chalres Carmouche was. He played three early minutes but never returned. The most obvious answer would be his knee tendinitis may have flared up during this 3 games in 6 day stretch. His defense could have been very key down the stretch on an on fire McRae, but unfortunately, he was not available.

I still think LSU played well enough to win. Tennessee just played better. That being said, I hope this game gives LSU confidence moving on. They still have big road games versus Texas A&M and Missouri. This weekend they have a big game against Alabama who currently sits at #2 in the SEC. LSU still has things to accomplish. They are coming together and despite the loss, should leave knowing they played a very good game on the road. I don't think Florida, Missouri, Ole Miss, or any other SEC team could have beaten Tennessee last night. LSU gave it their all but it wasn't enough.

The ole "ran into a buzz saw" theory was in effect last night. It was going to be UT's night no matter what, they couldnt miss.

Also, I know Im biased but the refs refused to call UT for over the back fouls on rebounds. I think I saw quite a few that should have been called.

The refs were bad going both ways IMO last night. Saw a few calls that coulda gone against LSU too. The Coleman and 1 was 100% a travel. There was an LSU over the back that they somehow called a foul on Tennessee.

But definitely some bad calls that went in Tennessee's favor. I don't think the two 1st half charges were really charges. There were some instances of Tenn over the back.

For the most part, I think LSU played one of their top 5 or so performances. I wish we had Carmouche to play perimeter defense. Could have possibly been the difference. But I don't think Malik is a bad defender... Just fouls too much.

Tough game, but LSU definitely played well.

I would gladly take my chances against this Tennessee team in the SEC tourny. If they shoot just 50% from three point range last night LSU may have won. Not only did they make 10/15 from 3 point land, but everytime LSU made two buckets in a row they killed the momentum by bombing in a 3 ball.

No way they shoot that way again at a later date away from Knoxville.

First game we've had more offensive rebounds than defensive... Thats a crazy stat.

Any official word on what happened to Carmouche?

Nothing. When asked if fatigue played a part in the loss, Coach Jones said absolutely not. Which means he was either lying in the Carmouche situation or it's something else. He didn't really look hurt so Im not sure. I dont think he would have been held out of that game unless it was injury related.

And we know he has had a problem with his knee flaring up for years so I'd imagine it was precautionary due to the amount of basketball we've been playing lately.

It sucks. He was coming off his best game of the year.

Oh Well! 5 in a row to end the season!

I think losing Carmouche was key in the game. Stringer had to guard Mcree most of the game and although i love Stringer's tenacity on D, it was a bad matchup for him tonight. I thought it was one of our best road performances this year. I like the way Morgan played last night, i think some reach in fouls they called on him were pretty ticky tack. Just wished Hammink showed more aggression like Morgan does because it hurts Shane when he actually gets to play. ADP had another solid game and Hickey played better in the second half after a shaky first. If we played like this on Saturday we should beat Bama, just hope Carmouche can make it back because it looked like Shavon was limping late as well.

One of the positives that I took away was that Hammink and Collins were both needed tonight and both logged some positive minutes. This will be huge if it continues if we make a run in the SEC tourney or postseason tourney where fatigue can become a factor.

Hickey takes too many shots. Glad the adjusted numbers show him in the red because his game did not deserve a green box last night. Especially the last 4 minutes of the 1st half when JOB came out. It became wild jump shot time.

I think he would be much better if he was more selective with his jump shots and looked to pass more. Especially with 12 seconds on the clock.

The perimeter defense was really bad, but I don't think we played against many good perimeter shooting teams this year, so it is difficult to tell how new that was.

Tennessee isn't a good perimeter shooting team... They are 284th in 3 point percentage... They had one of those nights where the basket is 5 feet wide. That's all.

Nope. Johnny took the lead Saturday at 11. Stokes only had 10. Promise.
