| The most intriguing players at the combine tyrann mathieu #1 cbs (Posted on 2/19/13 at 10:47 pm)
1. Tyrann Mathieu, LSU, DB-KR: The guy formerly known as the "Honey Badger" almost won the Heisman in 2011 but then had all sorts of off-field problems and missed the 2012 season. Mathieu's lack of size (5-foot-8, 180 pounds) was always going to be a concern for most folks. Now you factor in some character question marks, and you have a prospect who probably doesn't go in the first 100 picks. He'd be a small corner, but skill-wise, he's not really a pure cover man. But he is super quick and instinctive. Above all, Mathieu is fearless with an uncanny knack for making big plays, whether those are picks, forced fumbles or sacks. In 26 games at LSU, he created an astounding 14 turnovers, and that was in his first two seasons in the program -- a time when few blue-chippers at LSU are even on the two-deep LINK /

People always tell me I'm wrong but I think he can be a Troy Polamalu type safety in the NFL. His ball skills are uncanny, he is tough as nails and is a natural on field leader (off the field not so much). His biggest weakness is one on one coverage especially against slot WR's which as a Safety he would not be asked to do as much of

I believe he's got the heart to play in NFL,and I hope he gets the opportunity, but can he shed all the distractions and focus on football ? He seems like a very nice young man who's been blessed with these great skills. I'll be rooting for him.

Except Polamalu played 4 years of college football and didn't have a history of drug abuse and criminal offenses....no offense to Tyrann but any NFL team that doesn't weigh his off the field issues as a factor is not looking at things right. Too many idiots in the NFL with guns and killing people driving while drunk.

IMO his criminal offenses are but not limited to 1. His 2nd Punt Return vs UGA in the SECCG 2. Strip score vs Orgeon 3. What he did to Geno Smith in Morgantown All those players involved should have pressed charges against Tyran

Someone will take a flier on him, possibly as early as the mid-rounds. Probably more towards the late rounds, though. I just can't see him going undrafted. Once that happens, it's anyone's guess what could happen.

I would be shocked if he went undrafted. He was too electric of a college player to not take a chance on him in the mid to late rounds.

His skills to get to the ball are great. The problem he will have is staying healthy. If he were to be a position player on defense, he will e getting battered on every play by 220-350 lb players. I'm not sure a body his size could continually take the abuse in the NFL. There is NO hiding in the league. If you are out there, they will find you and try to exploit your weakness, which in his case would be his overall size. I hope him great success. The selfish side of me will always hold some anger towards a person who had total disregard for LSU and the people like Miles who extended themselves to make him a better person, only to have him take part in the events that happened.

His major weakness is not his cover skills, it's himself.

He will go in the 3-4 round. Book it. He was never a 1st rounder because of his size.

I'll be curious to see his 40 time at the combine. Supposedly Tenn passed on him because his 40 time at one of their camps wasn't mpressive. If he runs a slow 40, then it would be easy for the scouts to decide that he is too slow to play CB and too small to play safety or linebacker. On the other hand, when you watch him play, or watch video of him doing agility drills in practice, he looks like the quickest, smoothest player on the field. If he falls to a late round, I think that someone could get a steal. Even if he isn't an every down player, he could be a playmaker on special teams and in nickle and dime packages.

he is a lot closer to an Ed Reed type than Polamalu. I truly believe Tyrann's best position is going to be at Safety. Hell, bob sanders was small and was pretty damn effective at safety before injuries got to him. I know everybody likes to think about Tyrann's position being the nickel, but guys like Welker will eat him alive if he's asked to cover the slot. That, and I think Tyrann's cover skills are vastly UNDERRATED. I know bama beat him on 1/9, but those throws and catches were fricking perfect and on the money. It's not like Tyrann was completely torched or pulled a Jason David out there. He's going to succeed either at safety or as a tampa cover 2 corner.

THIS. What exactly has the guy done besides smoke weed? I know it's stupid that he wouldn't stop, but frick you guys act like he's going all Cecil Collins or something. I've never quite understood why so many LSU fans are pulling against him and JR right now.

I hear ya!! But he was an athlete on a major football program. Stay out of trouble and leave the pot alone for 3/4 years and then smoke it all you want. You wanna smoke it, go ahead , your decision, but you can't play ball.
