oh, so you want to "fix" something you havenet watched in years.

Yeah. So maybe it would be worth watching again. There hasn't been anything entertaining about it in several years. I no longer care to make it a point to watch. I used to.

Missing multiple times just destroys the excitement. At the same time, if the NBA eliminated the 1:30 time limit and only gave them 2 chances, then most of the guys this year wouldn't have successfully gotten down a single dunk which would have really sucked.

yeah it used to be the "you can miss once" rule and the fans bitched and wanted the time limit, so they instituted the time limit

The last one I enjoyed was Dwight Howard. Not because it was a great dunk contest though, but because I was a Magic and Howard fan.

The last one that really sticks out in my mind as really entertaining was Vince Carter, though I am sure I am missing one or two good ones since then.

It is almost always a let down.

And I agree, the clock and other rule changes seem to hurt the contest rather than help it.

The only thing I'd like to see is a limit on the props.

1 prop, and 1 "partner" dunk and the contestants can use them at any time they'd like.

Some of the contestants get carried away and it detracts from just seeing feats of athleticism which is what everyone is watching to see.

Vince Carter's may be the best individual dunk contest performance. I've already acknowledged that one. Of course, it was 13 years ago. Jason Richardson's was pretty good as well. The rest were pretty mediocre.

I'm not sure how old you are, but that may have something to do with it. A combination of not being old enough to appreciate the late 80's contests and the fact that as we age, dunk contests may just become less entertaining. Kids today may love the current version the same way I loved the former version.

I mostly blame Brent Barry for the demise of the dunk contest. Vince tried to save it, but Brent did too much damage.

J-Rich did better

but they do better dunks now. much, much better dunks

hell even the dunks vince did in 2000 aren't shite now

well those mid-90s contests were terrible (including the one Kobe won). that's why they took a few years off

there have been some amazing performances and some amazing mano-a-mano contests (J-Rich v. Mason, Vince v. Tmac/Francis, Nate Rob v. like 5 guys, etc)

Get stars to do it. Or do it like that thing that used to be on espn where they have to keep jumping over a bar. Make it about jumping. Those would be exciting.

That was a good dunk, but in real time, it was probably hard for the judges to appreciate it. However, you had Shannon Brown and Gerald Wallace doing dunks that I could do in college. It was a fairly disappointing and not that entertaining top me.

I agree, but the show and competition isn't as entertaining.

those dunks would have been huge dunks in the 80s/90s though

the point was that derozan does a vastly superior dunk to what kobe did, and kobe gets a 49 then and derozan gets a 42 now

it's better now

Why was that a point? It has nothing to do with the discussion.

It isn't like the scoring is objective or done by the same judges over the years. A comparison of scores between years is as arbitrary as it gets. Hell, judges don't seem consistent from dunk to dunk.

It is the entertainment value, the show that matters.

Dominque slightly out performed Jordan in 1988, but Jordan won because it was in Chicago and everyone wanted to Jordan to win. Still, it was the show that was entertaining, not really the outcome.

No, those would have been week even then.

Some hack on ESPN said it's boring so here we are with threads like this..

Dunk contests are mostly for kids entertainment anyways. I'm not sure how some can't appreciate some of those ducks you listed though

Jordan's free throw line dunk was far better than what Wallace and Brown were doing. Also, Jordan gets some credit for actually jumping from the free line while most that do it always step just inside it.

ETA: Also, the one where he pumped it is the standard for all free throw line dunks that hasn't been matched.

Missing the point to be a dick or just because you are dumb?
