re: Dave Grohls Sound City

Watched it on a business trip a week ago. Really enjoyed the first 3/4 of the documentary. I'm a big audio junkie and the history of that sound board is fascinating. The last quarter of the documentary and the recording of his tribute album was kind of blah although it was cool seeing Josh Homme, Trent Reznor and Grohl iron out a tune from scratch.

Was available to rent on I Tunes last week. Don't know if it was a temporary promotional type do deal...?? Worth watching if you get the chance.

re: Dave Grohls Sound City

The whole analog versus digital recording format debate is really interesting. I record music with a friend as a hobby and the Pro Tools home revolution in recording has made it possible to record and mix a good quality song in your basement when you used to have to pump thousands into studios (Sound City.) The unfortunate thing is it allows thousands of hacks like myself to think they are the next Rick Rubin.

You listen to the album "Damn the Torpedos" by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and sit back and realize that 90 percent of that album was recorded with full band, live takes. Talk about having to have talent. Today, not so much.
