re: Javi gets a bad wrap. Why do people hate him so much?

#1. The most obvious thing that stands out to even the dumbest fans, sort of like J-Lee's pick 6's in 2008, is the atrocious baserunning over the last 3 years. Javi's first year was 2009, and the baserunning wasn't particularly good then either (remember J-Mitch's 4 or so unforced outs on the basepaths in the regional), but the team finally got serious and conservative for the CWS. Since 2010, however, LSU has been the absolute worst baserunning team I have ever seen at any competitive level. To have it happen one year could just be attributed to a one-in-a-million lightning strike from the heavens. To have it happen 3 years in a row means that something has obviously gone terribly awry with the baserunning.

#2. Yeah, like somebody said, the hitting has underperformed too. Last year LSU won an SEC title despite being in the bottom half of the conference in run production, and in particular, there were a lot of hitters who were worse than they were in 2010 (Hanover, Fields, Nola, Jones, et al.). Plus, all the rookie hitters last season were lackluster. A program like LSU depends on fresh blood having spectacular seasons from time to time in order to bring home championships.

#3. The hitters also look silly often. A lot of people hitting a lot of long fly outs instead of line drives because they're chasing HRs or something. A lot of grounding into double plays rather than trying to poke or slap something to move the runner over. A lot of taking good pitches early in the count and chasing bad pitches late in the count. That sort of thing.

I mean, maybe the guy will turn out to be a decent coach at this level one day, but so far, (A) there is nothing on his resume to indicate that he has achieved anything worthy of his current position, (B) a lot of hitters under his watch have gotten worse during his time here, & (C) he has clearly visible responsibility for a glaring and catastrophically bad baserunning phenomenon during his tenure--a phenomenon so pervasively bad that I can't think of any historical example from all of baseball with which to compare it.

So we are the only team to hit into double plays?

Because lsu has been a terrible hitting team in the last 3 years and looks retarded running the bases.

Not only is the above true, but promoting Javi to hitting coach was like Les Miles hiring an offensive coordinator with a resume of: two years grad asst, and two years tight end coach. Don't forget, he's Paul Mainieri's godson. Just a year ago Mainieri fired a coach that wasn't getting the job done and made a great replacement. The Javi position reeks of nepotism.

When is the last time LSU lost a key game 8-7? We lose a ton of 3-2 games. Our pitching staff produces, and many times has to be excellent or we get beat. Stoney Brook's pitching staff was below average (their hitters were legit) and we let those bunch of noodle arms shut us down to give us the most embarrassing series defeat in LSU baseball history.

In large part because all LSU's hitters were hamming it up trying to knock it out the park, and coming up with futile outs instead. A little bad luck, like with Rhymes suddenly having a bad series, is just bad luck. But a whole lot of LSU's recent scoring droughts against higher competition have been due to an inexcusably undisciplined offensive approach.

LSU doesn't have that scientific, by the book, constant spouting off of situational statistics, stopwatch-in-my-hand approach that it used to have when DeWayne Bailey was in charge of offense. The "hey, scouts, look at me and what I can do!" approach to hitting and baserunning has got to fricking go. (To say nothing of the shocking ignorance of common baseball statistics regarding when it's acceptable to have players sacrifice bunt, particularly players who are bad at doing it.)

Here's to hoping that some changes have been made since last year and things will be better this season.

It's sad he did not fix it in the off season.

Rhymes suddenly having a bad series

I view it as, without Rhymes hitting .485, LSU couldn't score runs. I think it shows how weak that hitting lineup was last year that if you take Rhymes out, LSU couldn't score runs. All to Raph Rhymes for carrying that lineup on his back last year.

This year I would like to see more guys take the Raph Rhymes approach and use the opposite field so that they will be able to hit off speed pitches. It's inexcusable to have so many dead red, fastball hitters in a college lineup. That sounds like a coaching issue to me.

this is what has always bothered me about the hire. CPM's excuses for him often bug me too "well a hitting coach really doesn't matter, we just don't have the talent."

Fair point Paul....who is the recruiting coordinator again?

And not for lack of talent either. I think Jones, Nola, Hanover, Edward, & Katz could have all had better years if they had better discipline and/or technique. And how Fields suddenly became terrible I still don't understand.

If I was a starting pitcher for LSU, I would hate him.

6 1/3 innings, 0 runs allowed.... No Decision.

Our starting pitchers have thrown 13 1/3 scoreless innings, and our offense has put up 1 run in that time frame.

LSU fans have to hate one coach on each of the big 3 men's sports. Someone has to be held accountable for the lack of perfection in the big 3 men's sports.

Well, when one unit is great (football defense, baseball pitching) and other units are barely average then somebody isn't doing their job properly.

Football defense and baseball pitching deserve more support.
