Asurob1 No need to crush the guy. There's good and bad in all things, including different generations. Some parts of the past were better than what we have today. Others are not.

How many of you people think this is an effective strategy for teaching kids about sex
Couple of points. 1)What percentage of "the right" do you think believes "abstinence only" is ALL one should tell children? 2)Related to #1. Are you under the impression that not believing in teaching certain things in school = also not talking to one's own children about such things? 3)You keep mentioning "policy". Why should their be a "policy" regarding teaching sex ed to children? I realize liberals think the govt should be involved in EVERYDAMNED thing. But, I disagree. 4)I don't think the fact that some other parent may suck should obligate me to HAVE to have my children taught about such issues at school. I'm doing just fine at it thanks. 5)Shouldn't schools be spending energy getting better at what they were built for than adding stuff like this to their schedule?

It just makes me laugh to no end to hear how great things were back in the "good old days". I'm old enough to remember them...that generation was no better or worse then this one...but like every faded memory we tend to remember the good parts and push aside the shitty ones.

this times 1000. My kid's school offered sex ed for them, I read it and saw that it was abstinence only shite taught by... catholics. Needless to say each year when that week comes around I spend the evenings correcting all the bull shite being passed to them by school. I recognize Im a rare parent who actually takes the time to talk to my kids about sex. What's sad to me is how rare I am. You want to cut back on teen pregnancy...be a parent for a change.

They wanted my kid in it. When she was EIGHT! It wasn't abstinence only. It was called "health" and they sent me an "opt out" form. NOT a "permission" form mind you. An "opt out". So, I called. Asked for the curriculum. "Health" covered multiple sexual subjects. I spoke to the principal. Asked about the "opt out" approach and said my child wouldn't be included. She tells me how the curriculum is very strict. I said, fine. Answer this. If my child goes up to the teacher after the class with specific questions off curriculum, can you GUARANTEE me that the ONLY answer the teacher will give is, "you should talk to your parents about that". She admitted she could not guarantee that. I said good. That is why my child will not participate. The problem is, you CANNOT control the people teaching. No matter their viewpoint, good chance they think it's better than parent's who have opposing view points. AND, they WILL use the opportunity to overcome parental views. I'd rather they stick to math.

It really shouldn't surprise you. We seem to be coming to the conclusion that the state is responsible for damned near everything. This has greatly affected schools. Parents used to be an integral part of the teaching process on standard subjects. They were key to ensuring children met the scholastic obligations. Now, they just sit and bitch when Johnny never learns to read even if they've never spend more than 5 minutes helping Johnny themselves. Meanwhile, I have video of my 4 year old(5 in March) reading over 100 flash cards when she was 2 and now, she reads short books to me on Skype while I'm here in Afghanistan. As for sex ed. Frankly, I think it's a complete farce to act as if someone needs to tell children about birth control. This is fricking 2013! They KNOW about birth control. Knowledge aint the problem.

In my experience, sex ed is taught as a 1 or 2 hour course by someone who is generally uncomfortable talking about the subject. I think it should be a class that is required for all high school freshman. A class that dives deep in to the dangers of sex and how to protect yourself.

I think it should be a class where a true sex counselor helps you hook up properly with a hot chick, or hot teacher. I learn best by hands on myself.

6th grade would be the best place to start. You know, when they are actually going through puberty, not 3 years after the fact.

Why do you guys think damned near EVERYTHING must be addressed by the state? The fact my neighbor can't effectively raise their child should not obligate me to have MY children taught by strangers about shite that different families have different beliefs in how to handle. And I'm no prude. My teenage daughter was on BC when she was in HS. At MY suggestion I might add. I didn't need the school to do MY fricking job.

Abstinence is of course the only 100% way to prevent teen pregnancy and STDs. However, I am a public school teacher here in MS and can tell you that abstinence only education will not work. Sex is ingrained into these kids at an early age through music, movies, tv, peers, and just society in general. They're not going to abstain. In some instances, you get kids from homes with strong parental support and they will choose not to have sex. But for most kids, the essential parental support and involvement isn't there. Therefore, effective use of condoms and birth control MUST be a part of any serious sex education.

I don't know what idiots don't want to talk to their kids about sex. My oldest son is four and we told him when his little brother was born, it would come out of mommy's vagina. Turns out that's a hard word for a four year old. He pronounces it "Fachina." I've already explained the egg and sperm concept to him. I don't want my kids being ignorant. We also tell them that Santa is just a fun pretend game.

It's the absolute worst method. The best way is to teach kids about the risks and rewards of sex. Be honest with kids, tell them that they shouldn't have sex until they are ready, but if they feel they are, then use a condom. Teach them the consequences without all of the over-trumped fear, guilt, shame, and lies. Just be honest and straightforward with them and answer their questions. Make sure that they know that there is no shame in not having sex. We all have urges, and they are natural. We should be teaching kids safe sex, not no sex. Kids are ALWAYS going to have sex no matter what. Discouraging it or outright banning it just makes it more rebellious, fun, and taboo. You might as well just give them the truth and encourage them to be safe and make good decisions.

I hope you tell your kids that they can't tell other kids that. Otherwise, you'll have some angry parents and sobbing kids on your hands.

Abstinence works 100% of the time it's tried. The key is figuring out what works the other 99% of the time, right ?

Abstinence is a failed policy Parents should teach their children about sex etc but some parents won't do that. The state teaching kids about sex isn't the preferred way, but it's the only way for lot of kids and that's better than nothing. Give parents the option to opt out.
