Abstinence only for teens

How many of you people think this is an effective strategy for teaching kids about sex?

The best method is fear. If you can't understand birth control at this teen age as easy as it is there is no hope.

If people were more scared of the consequences of unplanned parenthood and there was a tough social stigma things might be better. Abstinence as a main philosophy seems our best hope because the education is a bunch of bull shite. The kids are not emotionally or mentally prepared for the topic so there is no sense in acting like they are. Using birth control is not rocket science yet people suck at it. Hitting someone over the head with a book won't fix that.

You're right, let's treat teens like infants and just blindly hope they won't act on their natural urges. Great plan.

Let me tell you, when they showed us those gross images of herpes.... My class stopped having sex for a WHOLE DAY!

It really works wonderfully.

And by that I mean it doesn't work at all. It's an utterly ridiculous manner of handling a situation.

The right likes to mock the left for being too idealistic, yet this is by far the most pie in the sky viewpoint in American Politics and it really isn't even that close. We're 1,000 times more likely to create a utopia state with free housing, food and health care for all while still balancing the budget than we are likely to stop teens from having sex.

Abstinence is an effective strategy for:

- Not contracting a STD
- Not getting someone pregnant

It will work 100% of the time it is used to do these 2 things.

Let's be naive and Think they are emotionally and mentally prepared for it when all indications tell is they are not. It isn't an idea of no sex education, but there really isn't anything to teach.

Do you really think there is that much to sex education? I would rather not provide any inclination that it is acceptable or appropriate to be having sex at their age.

Obviously it will happen anyways, but with the bs in our culture erasing any stigma of unplanned parenthood and teenage pregnancy we have destroyed the only thing that could be somewhat effective.

That really doesn't matter. They are going to have sex anyway.

You are completely fricking delusional.

The US leads the industrialized world in teen or unwanted pregnancy by a wide, wide, wide margin. In those countries they don't demonize sex, they talk openly about it and educate properly on birth control and contraception. That's just not happening in many households and school districts in this country. Your attitude is part of the problem.

And it's 100% certain to fail as a policy. frick, it already has failed. look at our teen pregnancy rates compared to other industrialized nations who don't delude themselves with this shite.

While all of that is true, it might still be a good idea to dispel myths (for example, "you can't get pregnant if you douche with Coke" or "oral is safe" or "condoms will prevent all STDs"). Also good to teach them the symptoms of STDs so someone who contracts one would recognize it.

That said, comprehensive sex ed tends to be worthless because it's usually taught by some meathead gym teacher, and as a result the students don't learn anything.

re: Abstinence only for teens
I recall reading a study within the last couple of years that established that, when controlling for all other factors, the only thing that separates "abstinence only" students from "sex ed" students is that the abstinence only students were far more likely to engage in unprotected sex, and therefore become pregnant/contract STDs. The rate of sexual activity for the two groups was statistically identical.

You seem very animated about this topic.

Why not teach it if it could even help a small percentage of the target audience? Just because some teens can't control their urges doesn't mean that all are incapable.

Comparing America to other countries for most social issues is folly IMO. Other countries do not have the same demographics nor culture as the US. Get out of the PC bubble and realize that if you dropped a large number of comparable minority groups into the other countries you would probably see numbers start to rise to US levels for most negative social concerns.

also, there is overwhelming evidence that abstinence only programs do not work as well as comprehensive sex education, (lower teen birth rates and STI infection rates) so those children who you think can't comprehend the material are comprehending something... like condoms are a good idea.

Its the parents job and that's the bottom line.

You really have to instill in them from a young age that sex is originally meant for married couples. Teach them about consequences such as teen pregnancy, child support, stds, heartbreak.

The biggest problem is people in this generation don't parent their kids properly.

re: Abstinence only for teens
As a teenager, I was scared to have a kid.

For a good while, I was just getting lots of blowjobs. Which was fine by me.

Then I progressed to doing buttholes.

And eventually said frick it and went balls deep in some vagina.

The moral of the story is that teenagers like to frick, whether it is a vagina hole, mouth hole, or butt hole... and you can't stop them.

Even people who were scared of having a kid too young will eventually start fricking like an animal.

I plan on telling my kids about sex before the school ever get's a chance to. I'm going to be honest: it's fun, it can be healthy, but if you get a girl pregnant, I'm not taking care of her or the baby; you are. So don't touch a girl unless you're prepared to take care of her.

Paddy's Sex Ed (patent pending).
