Just sold the Bass Tracker and now its time for a bay boat. What does the board prefer? Dad and I are going in 50/50 on this boat so a budget of low to mid 30s
Also will have a down payment of 8k

A better question might be what is the best bay boat for my budget of $____ . This is the type of fishing I do or would like to do (marsh, inshore, etc)...

Depends on how big you're looking for and what you're looking to do with it.
You can get more boat in that range going used but if you want new you can get in a Nautic Star or Sea Hunt in the 19-21 ft range for sure

You will get a much better value buying used. I would look for a used pathfinder or blazer bay. If you want a new boat I would get a frontier over a nautic star. It's a cheaper version of the blackjack.

Hold off for a couple of weeks and go to the NOLA boat show. See what's there, walk in and around, and get a good deal on a boat.
I'd check out:
Tidewater 22' Bay
Sea Hunt 22' Pro
Blazer Bay 22'
Might be a little out of the price range
Sea Fox 22'
Twin Vee
And the Nautic Stars mentioned.
I love my Tidewater...especially for the price.
Edit: look for a used boat on Craigslist in the Houston, NOLA, and Mobile area... You will get MUCH more boat for the money

If you are going in rough waters you are going to want to be longer than 22 ft 24 makes a huge difference-

I agree with the advice given. These guys seem to know their stuff. You need to figure out what your uses are. If you want to ride like a Cadillac a ranger or bay bolt may be the best as they are HEAVY. However they also draft quite a but deeper. I have a 22' pathfinder and I'm convinced I could follow aluminum skiffs into the marsh. Whole shot in about 8 feet but it doenst ride nearly as good in the open water.

That's a good price range that could get you in a lot of boats. Don't rush into it as all the boats mentioned are good suggestions. As somebody said buy used, will get a lot more for your money. Good luck.

Buying a used boat can come with some issues too though. Outboards are tricky creatures...particularly those exposed to saltwater. I wouldn't buy a used boat without having a good boat mechanic that you trust looking it over really well.

That's true. But you save a whole lot of money and there is plenty of guys around here that will do a pre-purchase check for him. Just find one with low hours and should be good. The blazer bay I sold a few years ago only had 50 hrs on it. They are plenty of used low hour boats out there that people have to sell due to babies, jobs, moving, etc.

That's how I got mine. You just have to be ready to buy that instant...but you can get a great deal. Just be patient and have cash ready.

You will get a lot that will simply recommend the particular boat that they own or what their buddy owns.
You need to establish what kind of fishing you are primarily going to use the boat for. There are a lot of good bay boat brands and models out there right now. Each has its own strengths and weaknesses.
Would you rather a heavier deep boat that rides better in rough water but maybe is slower and drafts less or would you prefer a lighter boat that runs shallow and fast.
Will you fish in the marshes more or in open water?
Do you plan on doing any light offshore?
How many people will you normally be fishing with?
