"The Law" by Bastiat. The pound for pound champ of libertarian thought.

Bastiat was so far ahead of his time. Nobody competed with him until Rothbard, imo.

When I first started reading his stuff, every page seemed like an epiphany.

It would make a Marxist's head explode! In the unlikely event that the OP will read the list, I will add some others by Rothbard: For a New Liberty: The Libertarian Manifesto, America's Great Depression, and most importantly An Austrian Perspective On the History of Economic Thought

Eat the Rich by PJ ORourke is a must for anybody who wants to read about the different economic systems in the world. He studies examples of good and bad versions of capitalism, socialism, and communism. It's also funny as hell.

It is not uncommon for a student to be so strongly influenced by their mandated readings, especially if they had no prior influence or reference. I'm sure I'd be a watermelon (green on the outside, red on the inside) had I faithfully adopted the reasonings and teachings of my college courses.

I can't believe no one has said Anarchy, State, and Utopia by Robert Nozick.

Half of the people in this thread are probably Anarchists, no reason to suggest a book that ridicules anarchy.

I think David Friedman's work on anarcho-capitalism has a lot of potential to convert folks. Most previous arguments for ancap have been from a moral or natural rights standpoint, which IMO is a stronger foundation, but many are better convinced from a utilitarian argument.

I think it's dependent on the person. A lot of people are more apt to listen to the logically deductive rights perspective. As well as a lot of people are more apt to listen to the logically deductive utilitarian perspective. What's odd is that it started as a Utilitarian construct under Mises, and Rothbard (for all intent and purposes) turned that on its head. I think both approaches have their merits. Naturally I'm more conducive of the natural rights perspective because I think once people accept the moral principle of Non-Aggression, it logically follows (Even if it takes them time to get there).

No one would give a rat's arse about the moral foundation if it did not follow into real world applicability, though.
