re: Poll: Jindal Among Nation's Most Unpopular Governors

Jindal is unpopular among many conservatives because he doesn't do what he says he does.

Ethics reform?--a big ole joke. All he did was create a potential land mine for future subjects of his law. The law he wrote could be used to easily bankrupt a political opponent of any governor. We certainly need a good ethics laws but Jindal's is not that. Take it from someone formerly subjected to the law.

Budget cuts--we need them and we need them in a big, overhaul the system kind of way. Jindal has really only cut to balance the budget when revenue shortfalls have come up. He hasn't made real, fundamental cuts. He has used one time money for ongoing expenses every year in his budget.

example--We don't need to simply cut LSU's budget. We need to rid the taxpayer of LSU allowing LSU to grow on it's own and without having to kiss every legislator's butt for more taxpayer subsidy. Same for all the colleges in Louisiana. South Carolina was headed this way under Sanford and in fact did go a long way along this line. Today the University of South Carolina has an academic reputation far better than it had 20 years ago. Amazing what standing on their feet will do for these schools.

Vouchers-- heck yes we need voucher and yes they are a very good thing. Instead of sitting on his laurels and letting the courts kill his proposals Jindal should be criss crossing the State advocating for vouchers for all students. A little campaigning at home for real changes will go a long way toward repairing his tarnished image.

Taxes---yes we need to end the income tax. Jindal is not going to push this. He only mentioned it to add to his national resume.

Honesty about subsidies--never have we spent so much on special interest subsidies. He needs to be honest about this spending if he hopes to have any reputation as a fiscal conservative in the eyes of conservative watchers.

Now IMHO Jindal would be much more popular if he stood and fought for these things he gives lip service too. Of course he is not going to get the democrats whatever he does (vouchers will undermine democrats BTW) but the frustrated republicans will rally behind him.

I will gladly stand up for Jindal if he actively pursues the things I brought up. Experience shows me, however, that all he does is talk about these things--perhaps get behind limited legislation --to polish his resume. He want to go to conservative fund raisers in other states and said "I did vouchers" "I supported ending the income tax" "I brought ethics to Louisiana" ect. ect. knowing his efforts are half assed.

In my opinion, which that and $1.19 will get you a cup of coffee at a gas station, Bobby Jindal is good as a YEA/NAY voting Congressman or as a bureaucrat policy wonk in a Governor's or President's administration.

From my view, he has not an "effective leader". Sure, he floats out good conservative ideas to affect some change in the state, but the changes he has been able to get through he's done so from other ways than being an effective leader.

1) Promising not to veto the double/triple legislative pay raises in 2008 in order to get ethics reform passed. He was forced to go back on his word when the taxpayers, specifically those who supported him in the '07 Election, fought back and screamed "WTH are you doing?".

2) Using committee assignments to buy votes of legislators and as retribution against a "stray" legislator.

3) Using Capital Outlay to buy votes from legislators in exchange for allowing their local and NGO pet projects to go straight to bond commission.

In short--he is more interested in resume polishing than any real changes.

I agree with most of what Jindal has done except this one.

I just don't understand vouchers and how they are realistically supposed to help anything.
1) Who said private schools are better educationally than public--is there evidence somewhere?
2) Is this going to change their home environment?
3) Is there a limit to how much the state pays for tuition? If one school says their tuition is 10k a year--does the school pay the whole 10k?
4) Why does Jindal devalue teaching certification. You need a certificate to fix flowers but not to teach children?

I think he's great. Wish that everyone in the Legislature agreed with him. Can't find a single piece of policy with which I disagree.

So because there are people selfishly against him because he make cuts to the only thing he can he now is a horrible governor.

The state legislature is complete garbage and doing nothing. They are letting LA down.

Also anyone who thinks Mary is good for LA is a moron. I can't believe people continually vote for this woman.

What I hold the most against Bobby is he has not even come close to his potential. He was in a position to do so much more for the state, but, from the beginning, his only focus has been on his national resume & image. He's made a complete farce of his pledge to make La. one of the most transparent states in the country: he hides almost literally anything to do with his office & has only spoken directly to the local press, in a Q&A format, once...yesterday....in the past going on 2 yrs now. And it's not just the college kids who are knocking him; whenever they are focused on politics, it's on the national level. A huge disappointment.

That's kind of where I'm at with Gov. Jindal, and why I said earlier he's better suited as a vote-casting Congressman/Legislator or appointed policy wonk than a truly effective leader, which is what you want from the Governor/President.

Jindal is the ultimate politician. He moved to Jefferson Parish to win his first election. He of course became a Christian somewhere along the line. He is a hunter and fisherman-----RIGHT. He is in the NRA. The fact is that Jindal is for Jindal. He treats people like dirt in order to advance his political ambitions. His much ballyhooed education reforms are a joke. Jindal needs to go away and disappear.

This.

He's a horrible governor because he's rarely in his own state. I'd like a governor who is not constantly running for president. Everything he does, he does with the end result in mind, the presidency. Further, his educational "reforms" are a joke. He's incredibly pro-charter, but he doesn't advocate holding charter schools to the same standards that he holds public schools to. Further, he doesn't believe in holding private schools that ACCEPT public funding to the same standards. He's simply shifting the money around. How about some reform that's actually changing something? Many public schools are awful but he needs to stop spewing the narrative that private and charter schools are the end all be all if we aren't using the same metric to judge them that we use to judge public schools.
