I still like TOS the best, despite the overall poor production values (at least by today's standards), and occasionally hokey script, "Spock's Brain" - but, even when they had poor material, like the aforementioned "Spock's Brain" and "Spectre of the Gun" (they had about a $500 budget for the episodes - it was supposed to be a full on western town), the characters shined through.

Spectre of the Gun and The Empath are two of my favorite 3rd season episodes. The budget cuts hurt the season overall, but in these cases, they got creative with the lack of money and I like the stylized feel of the episodes.

Huge fan of TOS, TNG, DS9... and I really liked the new Star Trek. The original universe had been going for 50 years, while it was still pretty awesome, it was 50 years old and had gotten to the point of being completely stale and forgotten. Abrams came in and gave it a new coat of paint, separated it from the old universe, and made a whole bunch of new people excited about Star Trek again... I went into the 2009 movie with the mindset I would go into Inception with, it was something "new" and there was a deliberation to simply separate myself from everything I knew about Star Trek to that point, and enjoy the movie for what it was, and I ended up enjoying the shite out of it.

They made lemonade. That's how I judge things.

Abrams is not my cup of tea, but I put him in the same category as Michael Bay and others in the "big budget" Hollywood mold - take away their money, they're impotent.

On the other hand, give the Coens, Whedon, or Nolan a small budget and a green light - you'll still get an excellent movie. Just my opinion.

I am not a Star Trek fan. Closest I ever got to liking a series in the franchise was Deep Space Nine, but I still prefer several other Science Fiction shows.

I found the first Abrams installment to be remarkably awful in most facets. The acting and cinematography were fine for the most part.

That is one bad screenplay.

What I don't get is this seemingly significant majority of TOS fans who not only like it, but LOVE it. I can't tell if it is peer pressure, the whole, "We're supposed to like it because it is much better done than the TNG movies" or whatever

quote:

I have an attachment to the original series characters and the work done in that series and the excellent, excellent films done with those characters. If I'm not supposed to remember or worry about that, why the f*ck am I watching this movie?

All of these statements contradict:

quote:

The thread topic was crystal clear. In the OP I clearly stated that I know I'm in the minority, I don't want to be converted.

Therefore, this thread has turned into a bit of a debate thread.

And let me be clear, I don't want to convert you. The movie wasn't even one of my favorites and I don't really care for Abrams that much, either. But your vehement hatred for the film and inability to qualify why you hate it other than "it isn't true to the source material" is fodder for debate and shite giving.

With the prodigious lack of creativity in Hollywood right now, there is a plethora of films (and TV shows) being made that are based on books. I am a HUGE ASOIAF and Sherlock Holmes fan, but I love Game of Thrones and Sherlock. I don't think anyone will debate both of those series are very liberal with the source material. Are you a fan of either ASOIAF or Sherlock Holmes? Do you like Game of Thrones or Sherlock?

Abrams has been working with small budgets just as much as Whedon for the last 10 years. You are dead to me!

that is fair.. Whedon > Abrams.. but Whedon will no longer be creating TV shows.. so I is the sad.

Maybe all this comic book money will free him up to make/distribute what he wants?

I'll admit I wasn't a huge fan of Buffy, although I agree it is very well done. What I've seen of Dollhouse is intriguing, but I'm not sure he had enough time and space to do it right - I will sit down and watch it, though.

But Firefly and Freaks and Geeks are 2 of the best shows ever, and both cancelled after 1 season.

DON'T DO IT!!!!! Dollhouse was Whedon gone bad, he started the show off with exactly 1 thing in mind.. and it was absolutely awful when it finally happened, don't waste your time.

(and I own both season on dvd..)

I feel the same way about Armageddon... I wanted to miss a lot of things.

The biggest downfall of Whedon is that Whedon comes up with an idea.. and then it's Whedon's idea, and that will happen no matter what.. in the case of Dollhouse it just happened that no matter what the hell you did in the story, it was always going to end up where you didn't want it to, and... a piece of your soul would be forever lost.

F*ck 20 years, I'm 45 and I've been watching TOS since it was called Star Trek and everybody knew what you meant then - that and the animated series TAS

But, I'm going on 40 years of "budding nostalgia," as you say.

that's probably why I'm 100% behind what Abrams did.. where do you even go after 20 plus years of nostalgia than starting over? Eh, you might alienate the old fanbase, but those people that have been watching it for 20+ years? De old, de gunna die soon, start over, you will probably still get most of them, but most importantly - you will get new people.

I actually have a foldout poster from this episode framed on my wall at work.

It's the shot on the cover of this...and that's actually what it is from.

How a fan of TOS can accept Scotty getting stuck in a pipe, like Augustus Glup in Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, and just be completely okay with that as the character introduction is where I have a break with all of this.

Scotty's introduction is being given his break thru physics formula for moving teleportation created by his future self, which makes his teleportation into the pipe witty and appropriate.

The film has a 95% rating from Rotten Tomatoes.

I don't care. I watched it. I wanted to like it. I hated it.

My intent was to offer sympathy to any TOS fans on the board who might be afraid to speak out because of the nearly universal acclaim the Transformers generation gives the film.

Whatever.
