Read on CNet that the average ATT or Verizon Iphone 5 over the course of a 2 year contract costs roughly $2400 over that time period. I paid $350 for my S3. To all the..."I'm not poor" comments......I'm not poor either, and with a cheaper unlimited phone plan. We have that much more money to waste on other unneeded shite.

Straight talk gives you an option of either Sprint/ATT or Verizon/TMO. The thing you need to figure out is whether your phone is a GSM or a UMTS. Sprint/ATT are both GSM. VERIZON/TMO are both UMTS. Also Virgin which is a prepaid service uses Sprints Network. I just spent the last year buikding Sprints LTE network in Atlanta and I am now building TMO. Both are at least two years behind both ATT and Verizon. Although TMO just bought MetroPCS, so that expands their footprint in some markets.

For someone actively working in the industry, it doesn't sound like you know too much about it. It's pretty common knowledge that both ATT and Tmo are GSM and Verizon and Sprint are both CDMA. I have no idea how or why you are grouping ATT/Sprint and Verizon/Tmo together. Why do you think sprint Sprint roams on Verizon towers and vice versa. I'm not up to speed on prepaid cell service, but I've been hearing it might be the way to go especially if you can get a Nexus 4 and have good Tmo service. Tmo's HSPA+ is plenty fast enough and actually compares favorably to LTE in some cases. LTE is probably going to be pretty limited on the prepaid side. I think Cricket and MetroPcs offer some LTE in their primary markets. I would stay away from the Sprint Wimax prepaid out there. They have given up on Wimax already and it won't be around to much longer.

I have been researching this subject all night, and the savings of going pre-paid and paying more upfront is a way better deal in the long run. I was even looking at charts on it. I pay $110 for Verizon and if I go over 2gb I have to pay extra for data. I hate them. What phone do you have? I am reading most CDMA phones can be brought over to Cricket wireless. LINK Unlimited for $50 But with throttling. I'm paying for two lines, with one line having a dead phone, then I keep getting extra hidden charges. It's killing me. Meanwhile my company phone is VOIP and costs $35/yr. I may just go back to having a shite phone. I'm done with contracts after being told I will owe Verizon nearly $350 for jumping ship, but its still going to save me money.

frick paying $649 for an iPhone 5.
you pay much more than that if you pay $200 upfront and then $100+ a month. $2600 for 2 years with ATT $1850 for two years with Straight Talk, and you can jump ship at any time, to any other GSM carrier.

They got some aholes up in here. Straight talk has very good service for a very legit price. Yes, it's ATT and Verizon network based now. What's great now is that you can pretty much bring any phone over to their network. ATT's contract prices are awful and I wish I could opt out. T Mobile has a 70$ unlimited no throttle 4g service for prepaid as well.. altho I don't know how good their coverage is.. I *think* it's supposedly weak in Louisiana.

You can't bring a Verizon phone to them. I think its only T-Mobile and AT&T

Yes, it's a good plan. The $45 a month is through the Verizon towers and I've had great coverage on my travels. I paid around $170 for a Samsung android phone that does everything I want but I really don't get the obsession with expensive phones and Apple in particular. It's just a facking phone, not a way of life.

Bought my son a no contract virgin mobile iPhone from RadioShack. Virgin re-sells the Sprint network I believe. Total bill is $30.00 a month if auto-billed to a credit card. Had to pay full price for phone, but I recover that cost at month 11. I have Verizon and wife and other son have AT&T. All iphones . Virgin iPhone signal strength isn't as strong in all areas, but he's never not been able to use any of the functions : call, text, data 2 AT&T $172 month 1 Verizon. $71 month 1 Virgin. $30.00 I may migrate the other units to Virgin as well due to savings. Stupid to spend more than you have too.

I've thought about this as well, but we use our cell phones for our main line. I would hate to have meh coverage at home and need it. It's still intriguing.

This is the correct answer. I use straight talk for my second phone. Nexus 4 is great. I use the att network so I have coverage wherever att is has coverage

You pay for it either way. Either $649 up front, or more than that over the course of your contract.
Way more. Any of you college educated types here can do a quick ROI or payback analysis. ATT or VZW will make you pay waaaaay more than $650 for that ELCD and make you think you're getting it for $199. Newsflash: by the time you add up the extra you'll pay every month of the 24 months of the contract period you'll end up paying a lot more for that phone at $100/month plan. Even the $80/month plan. $45/mo for unlimited talk, text and some data is a hell of a good deal IMO. YMMV.

Yep, that's why I paid for my SG3 up front and bought a ST sim card. Poor people get on the monthly plan and over pay. ST uses ATT so the service is the same, I've been very happy with it. If you go with an iphone you'll have to jaikbrake it for mms

Agree. Unless the person your texting has an Iphone then it transfers the photos. I have no issues with my S3. I was skeptical at first. But I have been happy with my Net10 service. Tmobile is just now building their LTE network. HSPA is not true 4G. Also, my S3 automatically jumps on Wifi when available to help with speed. I have 4G pretty much all the time on Net10 via ATT.
