LSU is 100% in the wrong here and they are using the "grade issue" as a cop out. Lawson will be eligible for the 2013 season, and LSU coaches know that. Moneyg has chosen to believe the Les Miles spin even though Les lies to the media all the time.

Funny, the only ones that assume that Lawson is a marginal enough prospect that LSU should feel the need to "cop out" are posters like you that claim to defend him.

I,and many others, feel he is good enough to take 100% if there was never an issue. Sad that you disagree.

That is not accurate. There have been several players who have taken this class and was accepted by NCAA clearinghouse. This has been said several times by myself and choupique early in the thread. The bottom line is LSU found someone they wanted more at this time. While it is "business" the timing was ultimately crappy. Choupique knows what he's talking about and has more accurate information. You might be surprised how much people on here know about the situation from both the LSU side and the Lawson side.

Lawson still has a full ride on the table to play at one of the premier programs in CFB if he just sits out one semester. He doesn't even have to start school and pay tuition for the fall, just get a job like a normal kid. It's hard to feel that bad about such an "injustice."

Does it suck that LSU couldn't get him in for the Fall? Sure. Is it something that is easily remedied? frick yeah it is.

Honestly if Choupique or anyone else close to Lawson is being all "rabble rabble frick Les Miles, don't go to LSU" you are doing the kid a great disservice. Lawson still has a great opportunity in front of him at LSU if he chooses to take it.

FWIW - He'll be at TCU through Friday... So they're putting the full-court press on him.

I lurk everywhere.

ETA:

My teams are TCU and LSU... So if there's any crossover - I'll have my nose in it. Also keep my eye on DFW guys leaning LSU.

re: Tevin Lawson to accept greyshirt?

Please show me where Choupique said anything about wanting Lawson to go elsewhere. Could it be a possibility that Choupique loves LSU AND wants to see Lawson suit up there??

I like Les Miles. But he shite the bed on this one w/ a guy that grew up 15 min from Tiger Stadium, committed about as early as he could, shut his recruiting down, busted his tail on his class work & then is told 10 days b/f signing day that he can't report for fall camp w/ the other recruits he's come to know & bond w/? I'd be a little pissed off & I think if any of you would be too. Lawson got bumped for Bower. That's my story & I'm sticking to it.

Combination of him and Riley at the last second.

re: Tevin Lawson to accept greyshirt?

Well that would make sense if not for the fact that Lawson has offers from Ole Miss, Tennessee, Ms State, and UGA is also trying to get him to visit.

Not saying this is the case, but I'll offer this:

Just because they are under the same conference rule, doesn't mean they have the same risk tolerance. LSU filled up with guys who they feel offer little risk or, like Robinson and Leslie, are on the right side of the risk/reward debate.

Did Tennessee fill up? Did Georgia? If these schools are sitting with open schollies and they take a risk and it doesn't pan out, it won't hurt them as much except for the possible use of that schollie to back count somebody.

So it's not necessarily apples-to-apples.

That said, I'm still not 100 percent convinced that Lawson is a grade risk. If he is, then folks in Livingston Parish haven't a clue on what the clearinghouse wants from these kids because they are absolutely convinced that he is 100 percent a qualifier.

So you think LSU wanted Riley more than Lawson, becasue the timing would suggest that. Lawson was offered the gray-shirt and Riley was switched from gray-shirt to full scholly shortly after.

Bower still had other visits to take at the time Lawson was gray-shirted. He was gray-shirted in place of Riley if anyone.

This. Had to be repeated. Sure he got screwed a little bit, but a grayshirt is still a great offer. I would have taken a gray shirt to Harvard in a heart beat.

I agree with this view, and it makes me wonder a bit. Riley is not coming to a position of need, and Curtis kids have tended to be mostly marginal college players, so what gives? Was he a take him now, use him to recruit teammates situation, or did the staff really change their minds when we lost some other high profile/low percentage LB's we were chasing? It's all very curious, and like with Tim Williams, we might not ever know the whole story...

re: Tevin Lawson to accept greyshirt?

To expand on this, I think LSU might be a little bit more sensitive about this. While they would never cop to it, I believe they signed Peterson and Fanaika last year under the mistaken belief that if they didn't qualify they could reuse the spots as EEs this year. In other words, they applied the rules as they read them and not as the SEC is imposing them. Signing them actually cost 2 potential initial counters that could have been used this year or the next. So if there was doubt, it is understandable they may be more sensitive to it than other teams.

WRT Lawson, yeah, it would have been better to notify him earlier, but nobody here knows why they waited. It could have been a cold business decision, or maybe new information came to light. As I said nobody knows and frankly it's irrelevant.

Lawson has to make a decision. He's got a chance to look around, and if he objectively finds a place thats better for him overall, I wish him all the best. But if this is a very human ego driven decision, it will be a big mistake. Objectively, the grey shirt is not a bad deal at all. Hopefully the adults around him are adult enough to push the ego aside and help him make a truly objective decision.

To believe that, you would have to think that Bower was in the bag from the time they asked Lawson to grayshirt (statements to the contrary), and ignore the timing of the commitment from Duke Riley.

I have no doubt that this version of the story is exactly the way that the Lawson side views this. But, it just doesn't add up.

Having said that, if the decision was stick with Lawson or get Bower, I will pick Bower 100% of the time and ask the kid who is still a risk academically (albeit a small one) to grayshirt. I think it would be a huge mistake not to.

Unfortunately, I think if you listen to those who have talked to the adults around them, you can tell that emotion is still very much in play.

I hope the kid does whatever is in his best interest. Like you, I just hope that he makes a knowledgeable decision...instead of one based on emotion.

Some people have mentioned Riley at LB or safety, but I'm not sure where the idea came from.

re: Tevin Lawson to accept greyshirt?

I can assure you the people I know close to Lawson are die hard LSU fans. The gripes have come from the way the situation was handled. No one I know is going f*** Miles and LSU. The timing just really sucked. Selfishly I hope the kid goes to LSU. Close to home, top notch program, etc. But I do look past what I'm hoping for and hope he chooses the best situation for him. While to me there are no other schools than LSU, that probably isn't the same for everyone. To be honest I could care less if he ever stepped on the field, more important to me would be him getting a college education. While I am sure there are some bruised egos in all of this I am sure coaches, parents and friends of the family will help guide him to the best situation for him.

re: Tevin Lawson to accept greyshirt?

I think this matter should be looked at a little different of an angle that I don't believe has been addressed, especially from the Lawson 'camp' if you will. That is, being offered a gray shirt with it taking a slot away from the upcoming 2014 class does indeed show the sincerity of LSU. Look at it objectively, the 2014 is arguably the deepest and most talented class to come along in a long time and for LSU to give one of those slots to Tevin is showing that they do in fact really want him to be a tiger. Those 2014 slots are gonna be golden since it appears that unless attrition really hits hard they may not be able to take a full load that year.

With all that said I can't see how anyone would think that LSU would purposely do this to Tevin in favor of another recruit. This is just another angle and how I looked at this situation. Have a great day guys.

re: Tevin Lawson to accept greyshirt?

quote:

The real story is that LSU had someone else they felt was better and gave the scholly to that athlete, which is crappy but I get that it's a buisness too. (still crappy though) Has nothing to do with grades no matter what they say
If grades didn't matter why is Cutrer not part of this class? He is a more prized recruit at a position of greater need than either Lawson or Riley. LSU makes decisions based on whom they think will get on the field and make contributions to winning first. The coaching staff takes into account physical preparation as well as academic preparation when making those decisions. Some kids will require a redshirt year before they are ready to make a contribution, and if there are also concerns about academics, those kids are prime candidates for greyshirt status. They get time to work on their academics, and their strength and conditioning without loss of a year of eligibility.

It sucks for Lawson that the coaches feel Bower and Riley are more likely to make a contribution to winning than Lawson. Lawson can accept that as a chalenge and attempt to prove them wrong, or he can go elsewhere and attempt to prove them wrong. It's his choice.
