Lonesome Dove was great but was a mini series...not a movie!

My top 4 are easily Outlaw Josey Wales Unforgiven TGTB&TU Once Upon a Time in the West I have seen plenty of the older ones and if i were forced to put something pre 1965 or so it would be High Noon. I just can't get into the older westerns as much. Once they started getting grittier and dustier with an attempt at realism, it became harder for me to even take the old ones seriously. It's like trying to watch Sands of Iwo Jima after watching Saving Private Ryan. And it isn't just the special effects. The camera angles and the scenes seem to always be shot the same in older movies. Almost 2 dimensional.

And in a much lighter vein, Cat Ballou. Lee Marvin is incredible in both.

Yeah but it gets a pass. The awesomness that is Lonesome Dove simply can not be limited to one format. It transcends such petty labels. Seriously though.

Lonesome Dove is, in fact, a western. My No. 2, by the way.
