re: Tevin Lawson to accept greyshirt?

LSU didn't want to take the risk on a player like Lawson

So why did they make him an offer and accept his commitment last Spring? If Lawson's grades were an issue, then LSU should have never offered. Lawson has done above and beyond what was needed from the beginning of his junior year until now. Yet, LSU waited until 10 days before national signing day, 1 day after his official visit, to spring the grey shirting idea on him. LSU coaches didn't even do it in a professional manner. They called his high school coach and left a message for the high school coach to call Sam Nader.

LSU is 100% in the wrong here and they are using the "grade issue" as a cop out. Lawson will be eligible for the 2013 season, and LSU coaches know that. Moneyg has chosen to believe the Les Miles spin even though Les lies to the media all the time.

So a grayshirt offer doesn't ever mean that a player can pay his own way full time for a semester as a preferred walk-on and then get a scholarship in the spring? It never happens that way? I know that it usually means a delayed full-time enrollment; I just wanted to know if a player like Lawson gets that choice.

True statement, but not necessarily what is necessary for him to play at LSU. Most of what has been said is some of his classes will not pass the NCAA clearinghouse to allow him to enroll and receive a full football scholarship at LSU in fall 2013. It's not that he didn't pass them, it's that the summer classes he apparently took might not be accepted by the NCAA to fulfill the requirements he needs to enroll and get a scholly at LSU.

Who's wrong or right is irrelevant. Lawson could've focused on his classes and making sure he was going to meet the requirements of making it to LSU early in his highschool career, just as I did and many others who went to LSU. LSU looked at its history with players and the clearing house and weren't willing to risk losing a scholly in 2013 if Lawson wasn't allowed in, like Avery wasn't last year. LSU made the the right business move to grant the scholly to someone who was a 100% lock to enroll, and then offer the greyshirt to Lawson. All it means is LSU still wants him, but weren't 100% sure he would clear. If Lawson wants to go to LSU, he should take the grey shirt, take 9 hours in the fall and go full scholly in the spring. 2 years from now, his grades in HS won't matter and he will be playing for the team he wants to.

As far as the timing of the grey-shirt, I understand how people closer to the situation emotionally can be upset that the offer came so late in the process, but the reality is, no one knows what info LSU had regarding the clearing house and if/when they received it. Maybe LSU thought everything was good and then received info that he wasn't going to clear just before they switched the offer. Again everyone is speculating at this point and if you are emotionally involved with this situation, your argument will be skewed to whichever side of the fence you are on.

Facts are there is a question about him getting cleared with the NCAA and LSU decided to not take the risk of losing a scholly in 2013. Everything is still on the table for Lawson to get a full ride and play football at LSU. It's not the ideal path from point A to B, but it still gets you there almost the same way.

If he actually wanted to pay his own way and walk-on, I'm sure he could, but he's nearly a certainty to redshirt and that would cost him a year on his clock. A grey shirt would preserve his eligibility, a true benefit if he is unfortunate to get injured. If he is self-motivated with a good support system, a grey shirt would be even with his redshirted freshmen team mates by the following fall.

It is not the horrible deal that some want to make it out to be. Once you are on the team it's up to you. How you get there is irrelevant. I'm sure there are undrafted free agents from JR's class that are still in the league.

Whether a good deal or bad deal, I would still like to hear someone address Choupique's claims about the way LSU handled this.
If Chou is right, it was handled in a high handed, Sabanesque manner.
That's not good.

Lawson's family wants him to stay home and go to Louisiana Tech. He's visiting us this weekend, should be interesting.

I dont get the impression thats how it happened. Riley was 100 percent qualified, Lawson, as I understand it, is not 100 per cent. So its not a matter of one player over the other. Lawson still gets his scholarship and everything else, he has to sit out fall semester and come in the spring, still not a bad deal no matter how you look at it.

He's making an official visit to TCU today. May squeeze in a trip to UT afterward. TCU held their last spot for him so we'll see how it all plays out. I'd love to see him in on one of my purple teams.

I dont get it. If he has no grade issues he wont be paying for lsu regardless. Taje the offer and sit out a semester. No way he was gonna be playing this year anyway.

if he does have grade issues (per LSU), then why are there 5 or more d-1 programs after him. TCU, MAYBE TEXAS ETC.

SEC has different requirements. Could be it, although I have no idea. Just saying.

in the SEC you can only sign 25 LOI's per recruiting year, if a player doesn't qualify, you've burned that LOI. I think the Big 12 is on the NCAA 28 limit and doesn't have the "burned" rule...not totally sure about that though.

re: Tevin Lawson to accept greyshirt?

Terrific post STHO. One of the best ive read on here.

I dont know anything about the situation. I do know LSU offered Lawson a Scholarship early on. They offered Riley a grey shirt at first. So if they went back and reoffered Lawson a greyshirt and Riley a scholarship it would seem they are just trying to do whats best for everyone. Lawson can continue to look around and choose a school if thats what he wants. He has an offer(greyshirt) from LSU right now and is looking at other places. Either take the offer from LSU or go elsewhere. No reason to hold grudges this is big time football; decisions have to be made by both parties. Lawson either wants to play in BR or he doesnt his choice.

What about georgia who signed 32, and A&M who signed 31

They didn't sign as many last year therefore could count those spots in this year's class.

Well that would make sense if not for the fact that Lawson has offers from Ole Miss, Tennessee, Ms State, and UGA is also trying to get him to visit.

That would be LSU holding itself to a standard higher than any of its competitors.

LSU offered him with knowledge that the kid was a risk. They had no idea how the recruiting class would ultimately round out. And, when it was time to make the ultimate decision, they decided that the risk was too great relative to the other option they had.

He was replaced by Duke Riley...a kid who LSU slowplayed for a loooong time. LSU didn't replace him with a late commitment that was just too good to pass up.

Lawson was somewhat of a risk...and LSU didn't want to take the risk. I'm sure he's a great kid, who worked very hard to get his academic issues as taken care of as possible. But, when you are risk...all bets are off. No school should be criticized for asking a kid to grayshirt in that situation.

I'm not sure how you are personally involved, but it is clear that your personal feelings are getting in the way.

Tcu and texas both f@)#g suck and they can afford to take a risk. But
OMG, be a man and come to LSU for 3 fricking months and you get your full ride at your dream school!!!
My son will VOLUNTEER TO greyshirt if it helps the tigers when that day comes! He loves LSU and would enjoy knowing he helped the program. THAT'S what someone ho loves the tigers would do!

That is not accurate. There have been several players who have taken this class and was accepted by NCAA clearinghouse. This has been said several times by myself and choupique early in the thread. The bottom line is LSU found someone they wanted more at this time. While it is "business" the timing was ultimately crappy. Choupique knows what he's talking about and has more accurate information. You might be surprised how much people on here know about the situation from both the LSU side and the Lawson side.
