Comus can roll. They choose not to at this point because they'd rather not deal with the political bs that might come with it. They're perfectly fine not rolling. If they city asks them to return, I think they would definitely consider it. I hope they roll again. I'd love to be standing next to my father on a float 10 years from now. It's definitely something I'd very much like to experience.

It all started out with a cinnamon roll. The rest is history and tradition.

I'm surprised you don't know. This is from Wikipedia and sums it all up pretty nicely
quote:
In 1991 the New Orleans city council passed an ordinance that required social organizations, including Mardi Gras Krewes, to certify publicly that they did not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, gender or sexual orientation, in order to obtain parade permits and other public licensure. In effect, the ordinance required these, and other, private social groups to abandon their traditional code of secrecy and identify their members for the city's Human Relations Commission. The Comus organization (along with Momus and Proteus, other 19th century Krewes) withdrew from parading rather than identify its membership. Two federal courts later declared that the ordinance was an unconstitutional infringement on First Amendment rights of free association, and an unwarranted intrusion on the privacy of the groups subject to the ordinance. The decision of the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals appears at volume 42, page 1483 of the Federal Reporter (3rd Series), or 42 F.3d 1483 (5th Cir. 1995). The Supreme Court refused to hear the city's appeal from this decision. Despite this, the krewe has not returned to the streets to parade. (Proteus later returned.) The Mistick Krewe of Comus still holds an annual ball on Mardi Gras night.
It was Dorothy Mae Taylor of the City Council that really pushed this through. Comus traditionally since the 19th century was the last parade to roll on Mardi Gras night. That's the reason there still hasn't been any parade Mardi Gras night.

Actually there was a parade, the Krewe of America that was started after Comus stopped rolling, but to my best recollection they paraded twice and are now defunct.

if you've ever seen Comus....who cares, a bunch of cheap old rich farts who didn't throw shite and zoomed down the parade route....with one or two marching units... a final parade to close things out would be nice, but i have to tell you...people are burned out by that point... Comus doesn't want to change with the times, let them die out...might take another generation or two, but with post-Katrina New Orleans, who your great-great grandfather was is going to matter a lot less...

just watch what happens over the next 10-20 years as all the young people who have moved into New Orleans start moving into positions of power.... you say Comus is a big honor, ok....but they are going to have to broaden their membership base to keep their numbers and that is the type of change i'm talking about or they'll die out....

Comus has been around for 157 years, since 1856. You're absurd if you think they'll die out or have problems "keeping their numbers." Sorry bud, but as long as Nola is around, Comus will be around.

Comus may still be around, but it won't be your father's Comus....as an earlier poster said, the mindset has to change about who they admit... demography has a power all it's own and tie that in with economics and changes in the New Orleans economy, that's why I'm saying Comus will have to adapt or die....

The Supreme Court ruled in favor of the old line krewes. So they have every right to parade if they choose to do so.
